HID lights are ok floodlighting the area with the lamps as far away from the cameras as possible. The major drawback is that they are not controllable, and they cannot be turned on/off at will as they have a cooldown period and a lengthly startup time just like football stadium floodlights.
NB, my company has sent our HIDs back to PSSL.

HMI and HID lights are not straight forward switch on lights. As Boab said they take time to start up, non dimmable etc.

But they do produce a different temperature light compared to standard quartz halogen that everyone uses. i.e. more white, more light for less power. Also the bolbs last a lot longer.

Look at most of the underwater video on any National Geographic or Discovery Channel programmes and compare their video pictures to what you see on your ROV. They mainly use professional HMI/HID lights. All the videoo done round the Titanic, all filmed with HMI/HID lights.

You can get HID (High Intensity Discharge) lights for your car as well 🙂

I can’t help you with prices, but I have a few experiences with HID-ligths, tho.

As the guys above said, the lights are "on/off" only, and in my company there is a 3 minute delay when the ligths have been turned off. The lamps get really hot, so they should not be used on deck.

The few times I have used these ligths I have been impressed. We did a job in the North Sea with two ROV’s. One with the Hid ligths, and one without. The difference was huge, and we could really how much better they are than the ROS- lights that we normaly use.

The only time I’ve experienced problems is when they are mounted incorrectly. Read the instructions and you should be fine 😉

simple idea is to fit ROS lights and HID lights ….. the ROS units used whilst HID power up or are powered down and backup.
