    Hello All,

    I was just looking for some information / resources regarding ROV fibre optic communication links. I have been given a project developing part of a subsea oceanographic monitoring system where one of the main technical problems is the vast amount of data that will be produced. The minimum we are looking at is around 400 Mbps but it could be much higher.

    We therefore need to use a dedicated fibre optical communications system to transmit the data to the topside. The system is intended to be attached to an oceanographic survey ROV and use spare single mode fibre (s) to transmit the data.

    Are there any standards to follow for ROV fibre systems????? Specifications for fibre, the topside connectors, the pressure housing connectors and the slip ring ??? Type, losses, typical wavelength

    We need duplex transmission but are not sure how many fibres will be available – half-duplex is attainable on a single fibre but more complicated that duplex on a pair.

    Are there optical transceiver/data multiplexor/transmission system commercially available.

    1550nm and 1310nm on single mode fibers seem to be the order of the day and if you’ve only got one fiber you can use a WDM (wave division multiplexer) to combine TX and RX on the same fiber. ST fiber optic connectors also seem popular in the ROV industry (the hot melt ones seem to be the least prone to problems in my experience).

    Prizm even do a pressure tolerant version so you can stick it in oil and comp. it, rather than needing a pressure vessel 😮 if that takes your fancy.
