    Hey All,

I’m a service engineer with a few years experience and have just finished the Pilot Tech II course with Global Marine Subsea Training in Portland.

Over all I think this is a really good outfit, and the course was extremely well run by Nigel and Andy. I enjoyed myself immensly, and feel it has given me a very good insight into the industry. Nigel is an ex. Supervisor/Senior Sub Engineer with many stories about the good and bad sides of ROV work and a wealth of experience to draw on.

I feel that just spending 3 weeks learning with him was well worth the £3,500 and have come away with some good tricks on how to do workclass mechanical and electrical terminitions, harness repair, fibre optic fusion, DCV test/service etc etc alongside the Tech II & I exam passes (which were a real doddle). Having a slingsby Trojan workclass machine in the workshop to work with was a big plus. They worked hard to get us some good time on their Seaeye Falcon, which they even let us fix when it went tits. The tour of one of their cable laying boats The Wave Sentinel gave us a good idea of the working environment, and I got to meet a few good guys also on the course.

All 3 of us on the course have got interviews lined up already (the other 2 lads were Global Employees) and I think fingers crossed we’ll all find some work soon.

It’s only possible to attend if you have at least a couple of years experience, but if you do have this background I would strongly recommend global.

Portland is quiet but with rooms from £12 night it certainly caters for a small budget.

Am fairly wet behind the ears in this industry but I reckon these lads run a good course and they certainly have helped us find a few positions to go for.

    Bristar,

Good to see you enjoyed the training. I have heard good reports coming from others offshore as well with regards to this training establishment.

It’s the real hands on experience that will benefit you in this industry.

The staff there have plenty of years offshore experience…good to see if it filters into the next generation of ROV personnel.

    Portland is quiet

Should have gone to Weymouth 😀 , but need you to have your passport stamped to leave Fraggle Rock and ensure that you don’t bring and Portland ‘maids’ across either…trust you popped into the Green Shutters?

GMSL do turn out some pretty good guys into the industry…even if I do say so myself…ahem 😉

    Hey All,

I am new to the industry as well and just wanted to give some encouragement to all others in the same boat as I was not so long ago (rookie looking for work). I also, after doing some research, decided to complete an ROV course with Global Marine Systems Ltd in the famous metroplis of Portland. I was very impressed with the facilities and also with the instructors, Nigel and Andy, both of whom were extremely knowlegable and informative in ROV’s and the offshore industry. They made sure we had as much time as possible in piloting their Falcon ROV and we had some time on a Videoray as well. We were also lucky enough to have a guided tour of a coulpe of their cable ships when they were in port. They also provided heaps of information regarding employment opportunities and some tips when applying for jobs. As a result I am very happy to say I have now secured employment and am on my way into the offshore world and all the adventures that come with it. £3500 is a good investment in a new career and well worth it. Cheers

We broke the videoray… it lasted an hour 🙂

Just got a job offer myself. Pretty much thanks to a lot of advice from Nigel… top lad!

Global Marine : Those ships in Portland must be a permanent fixture .

Its good to see they are getting something right ( training ) . Have any of their ships got any work ? Last I heard was 95% of the ROV crews left & the 5% left were the dross !

When I was there for 3 weeks, only 1 boat came in for a crew change, it took on a heap of cable and headed out to the Bahamas a few days later. Didn’t see any others… not sure of the staff but the lads I met on Wave Sentinel seemed like a good bunch.
