Phoenix Subsea Solutions get involved in some salvage work but if you fancy real treasure hunting try Odyssey. Unfortunately both these companies appear to expect excitement of the job to count towards your day rate so they pay real low.

Yeah, try Odyssey, http://www.shipwreck.net. I worked for them for 2 years on the SS Republic. Pick up 180 million USD of gold and silver coinage plus a heap of other stuff. Lots of fun but crap money.

ur havin a laugh arnt ya. No They Dont. I have one silver half dollar at home minted 1865 in a presentation case with my name on it.

    THATS IT.

But, you get to play with some pretty cool kit. Stuff you will rarely see in oil/gas or cable.

We had all kinds of great kit.

Fancy sonar arrays, High Definition 16:9 video cameras (on the vehicle). Broadcast cameras. Studio HMI lighting arrays. Doppler heads, High Res digital stills etc etc.

You will spend some time tripping over camera crews and their equipment and maybe hanging out with lisa ling. (NAT GEO Ultimate Explorer). I even got my picture in sept 2004 Nat Geo magazine, (it was a very small picture), not that it will pay the bills but it looks great on the resume/cv.

I will say this and I said it to K2 the other day up on deck, if you want to a get a shit load of experience in a really short time and money is’nt an issue then you cant beat it.

For example, over the eight months that we recovered the coins (all 51000 of them, one at a time, (YES….ONE AT A TIME) we did 262 dives totalling 3474 in water hours. Of that eight months we probably spend at least 6 weeks alongside here and there although I dont know the exact figure for sure.

Most of the above info is available from the website mentioned previously.

Hope this is of use, I probably shouldnt say anymore because I still have a job there if I want it. (i’d hate to lose that bridge).

Deeptek in fife are involved in Deep Sea Salvage

They did the SS Persia in 3000mtrs a while back looking for jems and gold

It’s not exactly with Standard ROV’s but they have a deep water deployment system that in theory can go full ocean depth, subject to the depth rating of the pressure cans & equipment used. This can deploy a variety of tools from flying grabs, demolition shears & hydraulic cranes on skips for recovering what you find etc.

It uses a combination of (neutrally buoyant) Plasma Rope & a Winder system on the Aframe that winds the power and comms cables (also neutrally buoyant) around the external of the rope as you deploy and winds it back off as you recover. This in turn removes the weight limit/Max Depth effect that you have with normal ROV Umbilicals. They currently have a 75 tonne system but are developing 250 tonne system. I believe BP were in serious discussions with them about using the system.

And yes Deeptek have the patent for the system
