    Stephen,
What is your trade background / trade training?

Fort William often advertise with the IMCA banner so should not have taken you on as a trainee unless you had a relevant trade background and relevant training and experience as suggested in the IMCA guidelines. (Note the word "guidelines" here!!).

Otherwise read the forums. Hydraulic, Electronic or Mechanical trade experience is required. A course HNC / degree will not guarantee employment in ROV’s. Employers want good experience.

Perhaps you should write a forum entry explaining where fort william has assisted and advised you. I would be intrigued to learn how they taught electronics in 4 weeks – It normally takes years.

my background is fishing in north sea, not a trade. decided to go into rov as a cousin done it a few years back and is now doing well for himself. I know i dont have what most companies want so i look to improve ie courses agency work to learn more

    Welcometo the struggle mate.

I did the course nearly 3 years ago and apart from a handful of interviews I still haven’t got into the ROV world. I should of looked into the industry alot more than I did.

I wouldn’t rely on an electronics degree or similar, getting you a job.

I’ve been working with surveying companies for the past 2 years. And the experience I have gained from that in electronics etc is far more valuable than the FW course.

The FW course was no more that standard grade- higher grade physics which you could of done at school.

edit: excuse the miss spelling. I was in rant mode.

If i was you i would do an electrical course. Only about 10% of Rov guys have a proper electrical background so you would be better positioned for work. The upside is you can get work onshore whilst waiting for a job offshore, city and guilds would give you a sparky trade, you may even make more money onshore

    Hi Stephen,

Any relevant course has to be a bonus, but you still need an amount of luck, persistence, right place at right time and knowing someone helps greatly.

There is no easy way – unless of course you have the dirt on an OPs or ROV manager or have done a course that makes the gits answer their emails!!

    Andy
