    Hello,

Im looking to purchase a small ROV to assist with my hobby of shipwreck hunting. My price range is between $5,000 and $10,000. I have little knowledge of these portable systems and want to get the most for my money. Can someone please poing me in the right direction. Also what about buying used?

    Thanks

    Steve,

    A couple of questions:

Where do you plan on doing the shipwreck hunting at, i.e. open ocean or lakes?

What depths are you thinking the ships are in or what depth do you want to be able to go to?

    Steve,

The open ocean & CCB coupled with your budget makes things awfully difficult… The only real ROV’s I know of in your price range are VideoRay Scout’s & Explorer’s and they and even though you could use them in the enviornment your talking about, it’s going to be a very tough job to try to accomplish with them.

Another option is to see what used/demonstration gear they have available for sale. It never hurts to ask them what’s available.

If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask or email me.

Thank you so much. I just assumed the VideoRay Scout’s & Explorer’s were capable of handling the Ocean. When u say tough job what do you mean by that? currents?

Yes, I think he means the current. I have worked with the VideoRay before and although it is one of your lesss expensive ROVs, it is excellent in little or no current, as long as there is little current you should have no problem. One solution could be to run a clump weight with a small cable over the job site and run carabiner hooks which you can tape to the rovs tether…..that will help keep it in place somewhat however if there is a current to speak of, you will not be able to do much work…… When I was using one, we employed this method quite successfully but we didnt have a large area to inspect. In fact we were just monitoring bullseyes on a drill platform.

ok thanks….I built a very basic mini rov over the winter. Ill try that first and if i have success i might consider a VideoRay.

Right now I’m searching the Bay with my sidescan to locate sites. I wanted the ROV to check out the new wreck sites when I’m operating alone. Then again, an ROV is a huge expense and I’m probably better off just marking my discoveries and going back at a later date with a buddy.
