I’m looking to find out details on ss7, I’ve been offered a staff contract working on construction boat. So I’m just waiting to find out as much as I can before I make a dessision.. What they like to work for, do they pay on time . And if you work on a boat can you claim back the tax as this would be the first time working on boast, been on rigs most of my career??

Yes you can claim tax back with seamans earning deduction (SED) but I wouldn’t boast about it. 😀

Despite what some other companies may claim, ss 7 are the biggest subsea company on the planet.

As such, it very much depends on where you work for and in what capacity.

Are you working for i-tech? As they’re mostly rig based.

If you’re vessel based, some are better than others. Been a while since I worked there, so can’t really comment on what vessels are the best currently.

If you are vessel based, you’ll find the work infinitely more interesting than anything you’ll have seen on a rig!

Thanks guys, the job is on a vessel…but I’ve had a look around on the web and there seems to be some sort of differences when it comes to claiming your tax back with ss7 some say they don’t provide you with the information that’s required for you to apply for your tax and some say they do? Not sure that’s even legal ..and yes been on drill support for some time now so the main reason for the move is the work type.

The information you need to give the Taxman includes what vessel you are on, when you enter the UK and when you leave the UK. In 10 years succesfully claiming taxback, I only once had to send proof to the Taxman.

The easiest way is to use a Seamans Discharge book and get it stamped/signed by the ship, this, however, only shows when you joined or left the ship, not when the ship came into the Uk and when it left again. Some try and get photocopies of ships logs etc. but I did none of that, if the Taxman wants to check when a ship came in and went out, he can find that out easily enough rather than relying on some dodgy photocopy of a handwritten piece of paper.

Some vessel crews don’t like the thought of Supernumeries of being able to claim tax back that they think only they should get.

Im sure this is not unique to SS7 vessels.

Thanks for that Ray, is it also true that on your first year with the vessel, you can not claim back your tax or NI?

Well you do have to have had a year offshore outside the 12 mile limit with more days out than in as it were.

You do not have to have served on a vessel as some sort of qualifying initiation period if that’s what you mean?

Would like to add that things are much better on boats anyway, and you do get the opportunity now and again to "stretch your legs" and go to the shops etc, sometimes in foreign places!

    Hope this helps!

No. You need to have a 365 "qualifying period". i.e. start your claim on Day 1 through to Day 365, and if during that claim period you have passed the various tests and qualify, you can then claim that tax back.

You cannot claim back UK NI (though if you work in Norway you can get exemption from paying their NI by getting appropriate paperwork completed and filed with them)
