Greetings folks. Just reaching out for some career advice. I completed training as a pilot/technician under Deep Ocean Exploration and Research’s program way back in 1996. Worked the east coast of Australia for 2 years, raising WW2 aircraft which was dumped by the yanks after the war. Accumulated approx. 100 hrs on a phantom s2 rov. Then I got married, had kids, and left the industry to work as a chef for 13 yrs. Now im thinking of returning to the rov industry. So Im wondering if any of you folk may advise … Do I have any chance of cracking back into rovs? Im a bit rusty, but am willing to retrain. Thanks in advance.

Given the size of the ROV and the length of time you have been out (and also your last 13 years have been spent in a non-technical – as far as ROVs are concerned – career) I would suggest given the amount of very technically qualified and experienced people also trying to get into ROVs that the chances would be slim.

If you had been doing electrics or hydraulics in the last 13 years I would suggest you would have a better chance as your experience back then may have helped, but without that I would say slim. Too many people after too few jobs. And the job would have to be as a Trainee as well.

Additionally, if you go offshore as a Chef, you’ll have better pay and conditions (in Oz at least).
