More Certs required to work on Vessels -STCW-

Well I thought all my certs were all up to date however it seems that to work on a vessel in the North Sea I need a STCW cert at a cost of over £1.170.00 this is for 5 day course .

Like most of us I have BOSIET , HUET , FOET + EBS , CA-EBS , MIST and Free Fall Life Boat .

Looking at the STCW course content I see :-

Proficiency in Security Awareness
Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities
Maritime Basic Training- Fire Prevention & Fire Fighting
Elementary First Aid
Personal Survival Techniques

From looking at your BOSIET , HUET + FOET course content it looks all most the same or am I missing something here plus I bet you need to do a refresher every 4 years .

Since this is the case why do the same thing all over gain ?

This sounds like someone asking for something without knowing what they are taking about.

STCW (the W stands for watch keeping!) Is a ships crew qualification, for people who have designated safety or pollution duties on a vessel, not for supernumeries such as ROV or survey crew onboard a vessel.

It is not a legal requirement as far as I am aware, but as we all know clients can ask for any bit of paper they want. Glad I kept my cycling proficiency test cert in case its asked for.

From STCWs own info, the people onboard a vessel who b restore their certification

anyone "who is a part of the required crew complement or is assigned a responsibility on the muster list"

So, look at the ships bill, you see who has responsibilities in case of an emergency, who is in the fire team, who launched the life boat etc.

We do none of this, we are basically passengers, supernumeries. Us having to do STCW would be like saying all cruise passengers having to do it before they can go on a cruise.

Yes I fully understand Ray this is why I was very surprised when I was told
" Sorry you need a STCW " and this was not just one job it was 3 .

But its all ways been the understanding that Rov personnel are " Not Ships Personnel " There for Dont need a STCW Cert until now .

If this is the case your be doing the same thing twice and at well over a £1000
plus 4 nights in a hotel .

I have emailed a few training places to find out if this is the way things are going or maybe its just a clients request that all Rov personnel must hold a STCW cert but this was not just one job it was 3 jobs with the same requirement .

I hate to think what there going to come out with next ?

I got hit last month with a request for a Norwegian specific medical for passage on a nowegian oscv into uk waters ! It’s not the 120 pounds extra when I’ve already got bosiet and OGUK medical but more the fact that I’ve had to find one of these doctors – they have to be approved by the Norwegian government.

It turns out it is a genuine requirement though, apparently the OGUK is only suitable for use on the rigs ?

Raptor, sounds like another money grabbing scheme…once again riding off of the wrong people’s backs. In the early 90 ies doing sub contracting in various ports on the continent, some of the vessel owners and clients were billing for food and accommodation whilst rendering services onboard…and this was whilst alongside.

Maybe the blood suckling leeches will probably attempt this on whilst offshore at the work site in future…would certainly not put it past current events to date. If the STCW ticket is mandatory, there will be a lot of freelance personal changing work location because of it. The same applies for outfits that need certain tickets to work in specific areas.

Bottom line, if they are requesting the skills, then they must provide the financial backing and courses for that specific area in order for personnel to obtain these…otherwise they must head for the nearest zoo.
Maybe personnel are going to have to pay for transportation out and back to the work sites in the future???
DUH.

STCW95 used to not expire as it was deemed as a basic course you either did further training on more advanced courses.

Now two of those modules need to be redone every 5 years and the others
I am sure in the regulations need to provide competence of further training.

So 3 of those certs still possible don’t expire.

When asked for STCW95 as well they want a ENG1 Medical to go with.

I have been asked for a STCW95 cert working on ROVs offshore.

I have a STCW95 Personal Survival Techniques course cert and that has always satisfied the client.

PST is one module of the STCW95 basic course. It costs about £140 to do.

I would check to see if you only need the PST ticket before you spend £1100 on all the modules.

The PST cert I have does not have an expiry date on it.

I also have an ENG1 medical and the maximum fee for a ENG1 is £80.

From Jan 2017 those 2 units need to be updated with in a 5 year period.

Even if your cert has no expiry on it so it will no longer be valid.

Bad luck if they all happen to be due the same year 🙂

I haven’t done a "high voltage course" in over 15 years.

My understanding is you now no longer require a separate UK and Norwegian medical – Norway will now accept your UK one. Many agents and companies dont seem to know this and continue to ask for it (rather like STCW!)

RAY a lot of clients jobs seem to require a HV cert if you are a supervisor , or the designated ET and for vessels in Norway you also need a separate noggy seamans medical , its a little bit more thorough than UKCOA one and the OLF .

its all getting a bit complex and very silly ….
