Anyone ever used the sprint 101? What did you think of them? What were the thrusters like to use? Was it fairly responsive?
July 16, 2007 at 2:44 pm #12868Andy ShiersParticipantI have , they were ok , thrusters were alright provided you blew them out after fifty hours flying time ( Different companies had different policies on when to do maintenance ) It was very responsive and very stable and a very good inspection ROV compared to the other vehicles at the time , Ie Phantoms / Ufo’s / Darts / Deepsea Rovers / Seaeye 600’s and 225’s.
I think ( personnal like ) what was the big down fall of the vehicle was the ridiculous price tag on spares and that being a fibreglass hull meant that over zealous ‘pedal to the metal’ pilots cracked it . In other words , they did not like being rammed , not robust enough ! I believe Robertson tritech were the manufacturers at the time and the money they stupidly charged for parts was what allowed other companies such as Seaeye marine to under-cut in the low cost competition Dept .
One brilliant concept that no other company managed to do was the single view port but change in SIT/Colour or Stills by way of prisims 😯
I had only taken a sprint 103 system down to 450 m and it worked well but that does not necessarily mean they could not go deeper.
I found the controller to be easy to use. The TMS was an art to maintain
( you either knew it or you didn’t ) People who did not know what they were doing tended to bugger around with the main clutch – In air ! . This resulted in a birds nest underwater. I had no problems with it though 😀
Other companies tended to utilise the old 225 TMS garage in preferance to the costly Sprint TMS.
Comex had plenty of these for sprints as most of their 225’s became thruster food 😆
There for , buying Sprint 101 and using 225 TMS saved them a few squid 😀July 16, 2007 at 3:06 pm #12869SavanteParticipantcheers lostboy,
i just got offered a really old one – no TMS – just couple hundred meters of umbilical – it looks like the thrusters and the command/control are the only things left on it and a really old tritech sonar – wanted to buy one and build an open frame version so I could fly my laser profilers in the local lake or up at fort william! The one I’ve got pictures of has aluminium panels all over it – guess goose and maverick were pullin 9gs round the old spudcans… 😆 Going to hunt for a TDR to check the umbilical out first.
the spec I have for the 101 is 300m depth – so you got a fair bit deeper or is 103 a deeper version? Do you know who made their thrusters ? – the kort nozzles on them look like an early technadyne. the manufacturer I’ve got is perry tritech.
July 16, 2007 at 4:29 pm #12870Andy ShiersParticipantIt used to be Robertson/Tritech then they were bought out by……………..
The only difference between the 101 and 103 is the 103 is TMS’d.
If the vehicle has aluminum plastered all over it then the original has been disintergrated long ago or it was put on it to protect it.
The Sprint had plastic lined props held on by an eclip if I recall.
The props were manufactured only for Sprint possibly from inside the Scandinavian quarter but not sure.
If the power was ‘dicky being supplied to it then the zenor diodes would blow and then it would not ‘start up’ ( topside processor talking to the controller board.
The old 325 Tritech was crude but at least you saw things on it …………
Not like the Sea Prince which you could be sitting right next to and still not see on the sonar 😯
The Sprint was good in it’s day ( as long as you were keeping up with the maintenance programme ) But they really are has beens.
You would be better off buying something newer SavanteJuly 17, 2007 at 11:05 am #12871SavanteParticipantthe people are looking for 5.5k GBP for it. Bargain or am i doing them a favour by freeing up their warehouse space?
July 17, 2007 at 11:48 am #12872JB2ParticipantSounds like the old one from Fugro Denmark AS formerly Svitzer remember to blow the 3 inch of dust of it if its that one and very good luck to ya, your wallet wont stay full for long!!!!
July 17, 2007 at 12:22 pm #12873SavanteParticipantah, ok, taken heed of warning notice – it’s definately from denmark. I’ll steer cleario!! is it well and truly phoooked? 😆 😥
Much obliged for the headsup.
July 17, 2007 at 4:03 pm #12874Andy ShiersParticipantI would say that they are trying to clear away dead wood 😀
Svitzer had three Sprints , one was 101 and the other two containerised 103 systems. Sn # 28 and 29 .They were all good ( At one time while they had their own teams )
If your willing to spend five and a half K on a system why not buy a Falcon ?July 17, 2007 at 6:54 pm #12875TheBaronParticipanterr….maybe coz a Falcon costs circa. 65k!

Buy a bluey with extra floatation , attach a large Toad by way of harness to the front of the toy , give it extra large Toad Fins for extra populsion 😀
By now there must be a Sprint Graveyard somewhere in wooden Top land 🙂 which I think if you bought all of them you could make a decent one out of all the bits 🙂
I hope my professional experience in the matter has helped you Sir 😀July 18, 2007 at 8:07 am #12880SavanteParticipantLostboy,cheers matey – I’ll break out the spanners and find the toads – frankly it sounds like a friday night on the town to me ! 😆
