Just about signed on for 6 months on the Harapan… offered 650/day and they claimed there were comms….

Tink I will stay where I am, 2 man cabin with on-suite, sat TV, Internet in the shack……. only thing that could be better would be the food but it is edible.

If any one is offered a cruise on the good ship MV Freya (ex-Conco 3), probably in the Arabian Gulf, or if she has been run out of there, Bombay High, GIVE IT A MISS ❗

havn’t been on this site for a couple of years as I have been out of the game. Now back again… needs must you know. Had a look at some of the posts I had submitted in the past, and had a laugh at pied pipers post here. Seems that technip’s vessels are still going strong. Just had a brief spell with them, although they have some new metal, the old shite is still that…. shite!

In this day and age, there is a lot to beat the Noordhoek Singapore, You have to wash your own bedding for starters, that is after you had to find the "laundry" cupboard, to make the bed in the first place, this is after you have had to clean the cabin of the detrius of the last incumbuntants.
Food….. Now your having a laugh!
At one meal we had scabby Dutch sausages …. Aye that was it, no tatties, no chips, no beans, salads NADA.
3 bogs and showers for everybody. No hot water in the sinks for hand washing.
That is before you go on deck…. Safety now you are having a laugh, but thats another story…Lets just say the 70s attitude still lives on..

But that’s the way it is "done" on Dutch ships as we were told.
Oh by the way, the client was paying 27euro per person per day for food & accom.

This was in European waters by the way..

Stril surveyor – the ship that one world war and a cod war couldn’t dispose of. She’s been converted from minesweeper to fishing vessel to DP 0.5 class ROVSV. I was on her last year – frigging thing pulls run offs of around 60m and a rotation of over 20 degrees-and that’s in "follow sub".

All they eat on board was scrambled egg and salmon. Also she lists something aweful in flat calm when you put a ROV shack starboard and mid-ships. She’d have been a bit more stable I reckon if we’d have holed her at the stern.

Now I’m sure the matresses onboard were from 1980. I slept on the couch.

I was on the Strill Surveyor about 4 years ago. What a bag of crap that thing was. Im surprised its still going! And yes the food was pish! Some sort of fish for breakfast, lunch & dinner!!

I cant believe weve hit two pages and no body has mention the S7000! The food is worse than terrible. Cold pasta and Pizza without cheese on it (Unless you were italian) 2 phones & 1 internet machine for 500 people! 1 English tv channel BBC 24! Third world ship with terrible terrible crew!

How can you possibly decry the standard of vessels we are expected to work on?

You must remember that the directors, of the companies that own and operate these vessels, do not give a shit about you or the conditions you have to put up with offshore. They are only concerned with profit and driving your day rate down.

Never forget that they can go for a beer at night and be with their families at night, help their children with homework, go to the kitchen anytime for a cheese sandwich and another beer or whatever. Your are making them millions a year by your ingenuity and hard work – fixing stuff without the proper equipment and spares – just to keep it going so you are not off hire and not making them even more dosh.

You must always remember too, that they have access to the telephone and internet whenever they want it – at work or at home. They don’t have to share one computer terminal with all the off-shift divers and crew.

You get to eat whatever is cooked (if you can stomach it again) and don’t dare complain or you can be run off.

Not to mention the vast amount of different skills and knowledge you need to have accumulated to be able to work on a shift of 3 guys, (who you also get to eat and share a cabin with)) despite normal engineering practice demands that you should have a skilled tradesman for each of the different specialisations – but that would mean installing even more bunks into the already overcrowded conditions and cost the poor old directors even more of there hard loafed for benefits.

You could argue that they pay out by ensuring that you are safe at work but believe me, that’s only because they are legally obliged to do it by international law – if the could get away without it or slide the cost onto you they would.

This is why it is so important that we, as the ROV community, get some form of realistic representation Representation that is not run or owned by people with a vested interest in the industry outside of safeguarding and protecting our needs and lifestyle.

So get on board IROVA and lets see if we can make this work together.

While we are fragmented, without agreements on pay and conditions etc we are weak and at the mercy of already wealthy and unscrupulous gits.

Rant over -By the way the PMS 17 makes all the vessels you have mentioned sound like cruise liners – how do you get those sort of jobs? Do you have to pay to go on these trips?

I have just had the privilage of working on board one of the Tidewater vessels, Mc Kenny Tide…….. relatively new build but chartered to an Egyptian Oil company.
I feel very sorry for the crew doing nightshift midnight to midday.
Three cooks on board but they do not wish to work on nights so………….. No cooked food for night shift !
When i suggested that they put one of the cooks on nights they said
( Tidewater ) This is the way it is ! Nothing will change…………… Don’t upset the boat !

What made me laugh was a poster on the wall in the messroom from Tidewater stating that they pride themselves on customer feedback 😯

Oh and they have an excellant observation card system 😆

Saipem wins hands down on the crap vessel front.

Thats where I first encountered the Ravello.

They have a policy of buying nothing, unless it’s about to be scrapped.

The DBA, despite various refits, is a floating rust pile with four man cabins (for us ROV types) that are about 20 years old. And the place smells of sh*te all the time.

The sentinel, which spent more time tied up being repaired than working. which was the only thing it had going for it.

The S7000. Known as the ‘death star’. get off it with all your body parts intact and you can consider yourself one of the luckiest people in the world.

All true, love the smell of shite in the morning when walking down a corridor to go on shift, really adds that final touch of class to what is already a stellar offshore experience. On the upside, even the scuzziest hotels now look like 5 star bliss to me in comparison. For Technip, gotta mention the Marianos. Still not in Saipems shit ship league though. Roll on death!
