Hello,
From hobby’m doing a "Small ROV simulator". Who wants to take a look just go http://teski.webs.com
Works with joystick and keyboard. In this version is running:
– Handling keyboard: W, S, and directional UP, Down, left and right.
– Drive ROV (forward, reverse, turn, up and down).
– Control of the camera (looks up = Q, down = E and centralizes = Q + E)
– Control claw: X = Open, Z = Close.
What do you think, has to have a small idea of how piloting an ROV?
You must have installed the plugin http://www.unity3d.com/ to work.

The first is the pool, the second is to inspect a helicopter that crashed into the sea and the last is to inspect an oil rig.
Hope you enjoyFebruary 14, 2013 at 5:09 pm #33671Kevin CruickshankParticipantNot realistic at all….
Who would use this and why?March 30, 2013 at 1:56 pm #33672rodrigo oliveiraParticipantAlthough not the first realistic version of the simulator was for those who would mount a OpenROV and get used to the controls, which is very important in a more difficult situation you do not think about what command should do, just do.
I made a new version, now with handler 7 functions, take a look.
The simulator is using two joysticks, one for movement and one for handler.

In my opinion the physics engine you’re using doesn’t look very realistic, or maybe you’re not using all of its features. Here’s one I made earlier ……
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vLui2XgHK4E
(although a giant beach ball may seem a bit strange it floats like a boat)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6EQ3fvZyT7o
…… underwater things are always moving around, floating, getting dragged around by currents etc.
The video of you picking something up in the manipulator looks a bit weird too, with the object bouncing around in the jaws.
Hope this helps.

April 1, 2013 at 2:44 pm #33674rodrigo oliveiraParticipantHello,
Thanks for the tips, I had not gotten done on the part of the physical read it.
I’m using Unity to do the simulator, which engine you used?
I was impressed with your simulator, very good. What did you do, work or hobby?
Thank you.
April 1, 2013 at 3:28 pm #33675Martin WarehamParticipantHi Zagrim,
Not a problem and thank you for the compliment. It started off as work but we now have a simulator company in our group that does a far better job of it than I could ever do, check out their video if you’re looking for realism!
http://www.f-e-t.com/our_products_technologies/subsea-solutions/vmax-project-simulator-software/
I do use it for some projects at work though, like writing ROV software when I don’t have easy access to ROVs offshore.
Here the ROV is tracking the cable/pipeline with no operator input, just using software and ROV sensors (simulated), which can then be sent offshore to make pilot’s lives a bit less mundane (cue heckling :)).

The physics engine I use is free.

Check out the tanks, very cool 8))!

But I use it bundled in this game engine (also free if you’re OK with the logo in the bottom right hand corner of the screen), which is very good, but no longer supported.
Unity looks interesting too, if the physics engine is any good you should be OK with it 😉

April 1, 2013 at 3:51 pm #33676rodrigo oliveiraParticipantHello,
Hello,
I know the Vmax, here in Brazil some companies use, though I myself have never operated it.
Honestly, it is a great pleasure to meet someone responsible for this great simulator.
Despite being "a team of one man only" hope to achieve the quality of your video.
I will give special attention to the physical part. I hope you can give your opinion in the future will be of great importance.
Thank you.

Is sort of how software (and most other technology) development works these days really.
The trick is spotting the best giants 😉
Good luck with your project 8)
