Port Harcourt – A military spokesperson says two Russian oil workers kidnapped in December last year in Nigeria have escaped their captors and been picked up by navy personnel.
Lieutenant Colonel Sagir Musa says the pair escaped on foot and were found by the military during a routine patrol early on Thursday afternoon.
He gave no further details.
The two Russians were seized by unidentified gunmen in speedboats during a pre-dawn raid on December 20 in the southern state of Akwa Ibom in Nigeria’s troubled south.
Hostages seized in the oil-producing region are normally released after a ransom is paid.
