Hi guys,
I thought I would chip in from an agency perspective. The activity on the freelance market this new year is slightly slower than we might have expected, but there is still work out there (a few positions have come live in Norway, UK (North Sea and Inside 12 Mile Zone), West Africa (Congo), China (Long term project and ad hoc jobs) and South America (Brazil for construction and Mexico for trenching / cabling / light construction and installation work).
You have to bare in mind that many internal ROV Staff members are getting their days in post-Christmas and regular contractors are being retained once again by clients. This will slow everything down for a while but, despite this, we are expecting the market to pick up again soon as more spot jobs appear and the regular rotation slots are opened up to the wider freelance market.
As Senior pointed out, there are a lot of stagnant jobs about at the moment that are fishing for CVs, and a few positions have been scuppered because of the weather (we are based in Cornwall, and have felt the full force of the recent Lows that have been coming across the Atlantic! Pretty hairy stuff!). Overall, though, 2014 is expected to be a big year – just be on the ball when the vacancies come up, ensure that your CV represents your capabilitles as well as it can, and keep apace with how the marketing is developing as much as you can.
If anybody needs any further advice, feel free to drop me a line. Cheers!
