Oh dear
Here we go again
It smells of the Old Bull and the Young Bull standing on the hill looking down at the females in the pasture
The young bull says .. "Lets run down the hill and maybe catch a couple of females and have our wicked way with them"
The Old bull says " You have a lot to learn about life sonny , Too petulent and TOO inexperienced ! , Why don’t we STROLL down the hill and have them all ! "Lets put things into perspective shall we π―
As in Teenagers ( We were all young once π― ) Rebel yell ……… "The adults have no clue about life !"
You think you know ALL the answers but you do NOT !
The expression ………. Jack of all trades , Master of none !
I personnally do not know ALL the answers about everything and never said I did .
Where you maybe a fantastic Schiling operator with dexterity But Shite at flying anything other than a ROV the size of a 20ft container ( which in my eyes is so easy I can do it with my eyes closed …… no cameras ,just sonar Therefor it is not exacty flying !) Your expertise in the electrickery field is boundless but hopeless at Hydraulics ’cause it damages your soft skin and too messy π―
You passed your maths exam with top results at school or Uni and know your mathematics in your head without a use of a calculator but your English spelling is terrible plus your commentary and explanatory use of words when doing a survey is crap .You know the difference between thread sizes but have absolutely no idea in common sense as to how to adapt a piece of equipment on to the ROV by fabrication of ali’ angle , Simple aye !
The amount of people I know who STILL cannot get their head around Fibreoptic connectors π―
Do I need to say more π
It’s a team effort "Dude" but experience comes with time and that means a measurement in years which means AGE .
So before you spout your head off about old timers 8)

Keep team effort up!December 12, 2009 at 6:25 pm #25773James McLauchlanParticipantand this was what started this round off….
Ray, your money depends on your negotiation skills from what I’ve seen so far. From everyone i know working for them (ive been here a year) they havent short changed anyone. I came from OII and got well more than what i was asking in my first offer.
I have been with C-I and I can say that I got about a 40% pay increase compared to what SonSub was paying me. I was hired on as a Senior Tech with 3 years under my belt. I also agree that it has a lot to do with how well you negotiate and how well you sell yourself. I don’t want to hear anything from all you old timers that think your still a green hat until you get 5 years in the game. I already work circles around most of the guys who have been doing this for ten years. With all the new tech on these subs, us younger guys have an edge on the old school guys. Remember, you pay a lot less for dial up than you do DSL.

I’m just so pleased that we are getting such high quality people joining the industry. Everywhere you go there are people like the above poster… they are so good it totally amazes me π―
I am duly impressed and hope to hear more about how brilliant these people are as a result of the new technology they are so good at getting the hang of. Bugger actually getting any on the job experience and learning about the offshore industry, subsea assets, diver support, man management, report writing, client liaison….. just give me a touch screen and I’ll conquer the world! Stand aside!!
Presumably, when these ‘super’ operators have been in the game a while, the new boys starting out will be just as brilliant, if so they won’t want to listen to older more experienced people that think touch screens are killer technology π
DSL will be history, and so will those (now) old hands that started in the game using those touch screen relics… what ever they were they didn’t last long…. voice commands are all the go these days so all you old timer touch screen guys please stand aside. I’m better than you and I’ll be supervisor in 6 months at this rate!
Bless their little cotton socks π π
December 12, 2009 at 8:03 pm #25775Ewan McKenParticipantIn only three years he is the best Senior Pilot ever, despite only having worked for a company which was ‘a turd circling the bowl’.
What a glowing indictment of the American Education System.

It’s astounding that rate they can make Stupidvisor as well!! Ususally in a year.
And yes, (once again) I’m American, a 30 yr. "old timer" veteran, and LONG term expat.
The American education system wasn’t as bad as this say… 40 years ago……!!! π π π I can personally attest to this.
I’m seriously thinking of getting another passport and stowing the one I use at present.
December 13, 2009 at 3:32 am #25777David StevensParticipantWow. I can’t say that I’m surprised though. This is the same mentality I see in so many guys who spend their days pining for the "good old days". I am not claiming to be the best. I understand that I am not savior of the ROV industry. Far from it. But all of you gentlemen that want to make this job into some grand vocation that is going to someday change the world need to rethink your station in life. We are a subsea Crescent Wrench ("adjustable spanner" for those that speak the Queen’s). We are not astronauts, going to Mars to save Humanity from extinction.
It seems that everyone missed my actual point of my original post and focused on my audacity to not bow down to the "Sacred Cows". The point I was attempting to make was that those of us that are younger and who grew up with computers in schools and at home are more than likely to acclimate themselves with the Schilling UHD ROV that C-Innovation uses. Therefore, it is not unreasonable to say that those of us with the skill sets needed to understand how Schilling’s ROV works in comparison to a traditional ROV should be able to garner a higher wage. I have worked on old subs and I can attest to the quantum leap that Schilling has made in ROV telemetry systems.
Lastly. I admit that I was promoted because of a lack of options. But I have earned my keep every day I’m out here. If I can keep the Dutch happy, I must be doing something right. I did not get into the industry straight out of school. I have been around many a block and have worn many a hats. Perhaps the fact that I have previous management experience has helped me be a good supervisor. Perhaps the fact that I have worked in a few customer service jobs has helped me know how to deal with the client. Perhaps the fact that I’m not retarded, can read and write has given me the "skills" to write a report. Furthermore, I have noticed that the rest of the world involved in the oil and gas industry seem to think that all Americans are just like the stupid redneck they tend to meet offshore. While it is true that most of the Americans who work offshore are from the southern states, these guys are not representative of the United States as a whole. We are not all John Wayne or Bruce Willis. We don’t all own guns, chew tobacco, or diddle our sister. Lots of have attend a school of some sort, have no carnal relations with our kin, while we may own guns, you not would know it unless you tried to rob us. The real America is not just what you see on TV or in movies. I know that not everyone in the UK is like Mr Bean or a Monty Python character.
So take it for what it’s worth. I’m not discounting the wisdom of age and experience. I am only proposing that it’s not the only ingredient to success. I shall retire my soapbox and get back to work.

DogIf you are referring to my post. I thank you. If not, thanks anyways.
December 13, 2009 at 11:12 am #25780Ewan McKenParticipantThe point I was attempting to make was that those of us that are younger and who grew up with computers in schools and at home
I had a nine year stint as an Offshore Survey Engineer before I started with ROVs.
And I considered myself a real Oldtimer in 2003 when I was promoted out of actually flying ROVs.
But I had computers at school and home, so I guess I must still be one of the young bulls.
Could all you Oldtimers step aside please!
Us youngsters is coming through, just as soon as the old war wounds stop playing up.

December 13, 2009 at 12:11 pm #25782Andy ShiersParticipantIt is sad to think π
When there is no manip work that certain people will have nothing to do on the job but read emails and defrag computers π‘Bring on the "Torch bearers" , the leaders of men ! the young , the bold with the strength of ten π
When the equipment breaksdown and we need a solution ,
The Young buck will surprise us all and gain a reputation π
I hope all goes well with you , I seriously do π―
When you carry on through this industry with your singleminded view 8)
This Industry is small and our numbers are few ,
which means your name will eventually get known from crew to crew.
So take it from me ( For I was young once π )
Don’t get a name for being one of the arrogant ……..ts πDecember 13, 2009 at 2:29 pm #25783James McLauchlanParticipantI distinctly remember owning a commodore 64 computer as a kid.
I think I’m also getting a handle on this internet thingy… you know, messing with servers, DNS, DSL, Uniform Resource Locators, file transfers, editing php code etc.Age is against me because I didn’t grow up with the intent….It grew up with me π
After reading this thread I feel young again π
I think I can make supervisor in 4 months now.
