Pay For Job Information !

I came across the other day a new web site dealing with Rov Personnel .

Jobseekoffshore.com seems to be based in New Zealand , So they requested I send in my Cv and certs to go on there data base .

Today I received a email from them telling me that the following job was available . So I clicked apply for the job only to find a request to subscribe for 1 month at $37.95 USD , 3 months at $89.95 USD or 6 months at $169.95 USD .

Are things that bad now were agencys charge personnel and companys to make money ?
I have seen in the past some states side and a few UK agencys charging personnel but I thought that stopped years ago since there are so many free agencys now days .

As for the Rov information on sale it was DOF in the North Sea not much of a deal for $37.95USD .

No I did not pay for the information I found out from one of the free agencys .

Are they actually an Agency or just someone just trying to cash in on selling what is essentially job adverts?

Ray, jobseekoffshore.com advertise on this website. Whether its a stand alone ad or part of Google Ads I don’t know.

As job seek partners they have Specialist Subsea Services, Cortez Subsea and Allen Hall (Chartered Accountants), listed on their Home page.

Hang on a second people, why is this in Danger zone? I see nothing dangerous or dodgy about this.. It is a different aproach though.

This should be in Employment discussion unless someone actually gets scammed which I don’t see any evidence of yet. All I have seen is an offer to join an employment site but it’s only an offer. You don’t have to accept it.

Yes, Jobseek do pay to advertise on this site. It’s a new banner ad and not Google related. ROVworld are not connected with Jobseek.

I’m not 100% sure about Jobseek’s business model, but my understanding is it’s a different than an agency and therefore should be viewed differently.

Agency
Typically an agency contracts you to work for them and in turn they subcontract you out to another employer. They generally take a percentage or a fixed amount of your money each day in payment for them acting as your agent.

Jobseek
Jobseek are not an agent in the usual sense of the word.
You register with them (Free)
The employer registers with them (Free)
If each party connects you work direct with the employer not through Jobseek.
At some point someone pays.

Maybe Jobseek should be a little clearer on their site about costs.

So, you clicked to apply for a job and thought what? That you would get a job and take not hit at all for someone else finding you work?

I see nothing wrong in a company helping to find a person a job and then charging for it. Agencies do it all the time.
After all, in the case of Jobseek…. Say you get a job as a result, you’d be happy and on pay, but where would they make their money for connecting you with an employer if they do not take a cut the same way an agency does?

Maybe the owner of Jobseek would care to comment?

I’m not defending Jobseek, just trying to see what it might be worth to the man in the street.

Consider this. if you ran just with Jobseek and they kept you in work for a year, through contacts on their site, and you paid an annual fee of $339.90 for the privilege would you feel conned?

Its the same as Divingpersonnel.com

they charge 10GBP for 6 months but today you can just use subnetservices and get same results.

its of more use to new starts in new careers.

Sorry, I moved it to this section as as far as I can see what they do is collect FREE job adverts and then sell them to you, surely in anyones books is ridiculous. Its ripping off new, desperate people who are willing to pay for something you can get for free – just like all these claim your PPI back companies out there.

Sorry but I did start this Topic off in ROV Employment Discussion but think it got moved to Danger Zone .

Since the employment information on offer is all ready in the public domain.
There for it was a bit of a rip off to trying to charge people for the information plus most agencys charge the client the extra 15 0r 20 % on top of your day rate .

But yes there are a few agencys in the UK and around the world who charge you as well as the client but well over 500 agencys that are free to the personnel .

In the end its down to the individual !

I’m going to shift this back to employment discussion as, due to the fact that it appears nobody has been ripped off and there is no evidence of such a case, I currently do not see it as fit for this ‘Danger Zone’ section.

Firstly though thank you for registering, as an experienced ROV person you obviously saw something that could be of use to you. Next all the jobs advertised are genuine jobs that people can apply for. Yes people may have to subscribe eventually but whilst the actual amounts are not listed everything about how the site works is detailed in the FAQ section.

The site is not for everyone I agree but there are many ROV personnel, surveyors and divers out there that don’t have the luxury of regular rotations and 180+ days offshore. ROVworlds own survey suggests that over 50% do less than 175 days a year, as a percentage that is quite high, 13% can’t find a job.

What we are doing is offering everyone the same opportunity to advertise their own skill set, work experience and availability. As you have registered you will already be aware of what is required. We have spent a lot of time and money developing a new approach utilising a clear open website for anyone looking for work. It also offers companies looking to crew up the opportunity to advertise current and future positions. It is free to everyone and if and when they find a job or candidate that fits their criteria then they are asked to subscribe. It is totally optional, nobody is forced to join. Once they do subscribe they will have unlimited access to all jobs and candidates on the site for the duration of their subscription. Like I said earlier of course it won’t suit everyone but we are helping those that need it. Advertising online is not cheap, I think it is reasonable to charge for the service we provide.

We are very open with everyone that registers or contacts us through email. I personally reply to anyone that does make contact with a query. CV’s are requested so we can vet personnel for companies if and when required. It also helps to filter out people that really do not have a chance of securing work as it discourages them from registering. We have a strict privacy policy and act with total discretion with all of the data entered, the policy is also posted on the website.

About me, I have personally been in the ROV industry for over 21 years and scaled the ranks to OCM and yes I am based in NZ. I am British originally and have worked in the north sea for 15 years.

And having worked for DOF I think they are an exceptional company to work for, they are moving ahead and I would recommend them amongst others to anyone.

I am sorry Clive but like I said in my previous email the information your providing is all ready in the public domain so why ask people to pay .

Even when you sent me a reply it stated nothing about making a payment to see job information thats on offer only registration is free .

You only have to look at agencys using this web site to see the ads your running are already there and there free .

Hi Raptor,
The home page has been updated and a link added that will take people to the FAQ page where it lists subscription fees.

I am also adding a delete option on the My account page so everyone has the option to delete their profiles if they wish. This will be available soon if you need it.

And I agree that whilst some jobs are available in the public domain, not all are. And this website is more about giving everyone the chance to promote themselves, their skills, experience and availability. If we did manage to introduce you to a source of work that wasn’t in the public domain and you did go offshore for 28 days and earned £12,600 to £27,440 (average going rates for ROV supervisors in UK and OZ) I don’t feel a subscription fee of less than the cost of 4 beers (in Auckland anyway) is too unreasonable.

We don’t expect to change the world, just help a few people that do need it to find work or at least point them in the right direction.

Ok Clive I think people by now know they need to pay to get the information unlike most of the other agencys which are free to personnel .
