How have you removed mastic/plastic coatings from small diameter pipelines (6") in preperation for a repair clamp install??
January 22, 2008 at 4:16 am #15506poloParticipantThis task is usually performed by day hire disposable unit’s, we are normally called divers, I am not aware of any rov equipment that could carry out the task unless you could fit a hp jetting tool on to a manipulator arm, the people to help you are the jetting companies. I recently worked here in Thailaind for a company specialising in high pressure cleaning for oil refineries and chemical plants and the equipment could strip plastic and resin residuses from tanks and pipes no problem at a pressure of 30-50,000 psi. Of course the pump needs to be topside and the rov needs the grunt to haul around the hp hose. Nozzles etc are not cheap and wear rapidly as do the pumps. The power source for most of our equipment was turbo-charged deisel unit 240+ hp and the water was filtered as contamination of over 10 micron would damage the ceramic pistons on the pump. Its a specilised task and the equipment required has a massive day rate.

January 22, 2008 at 3:13 pm #15508GraemeRSUParticipantYou can use three different methods
1 – UHP water jet , requires a hydraulically actuated tool to move the jetting head around the pipe. Pressure has to be high enough to remove the plastic but without damaging the steel pipe.

2 -Cutting disc set to cut just under the thickness of the coating and then use hydraulic wedges to split the coating off in a similar manner to concrete weightcoat removal. Again for ROV a hydraulically actuated tool should be used to move the disc around and along the pipe.
3 – Clean and Strip XT disc made by 3M. Requires a hydraulically actuated tool to move the disc around and along the pipe. Can be used on a standard GR29 grinder but it will take a bit of time and skill of the operator to do this with a manip held tool so would be preferred to use a proper tool. This type of disc will just polish the steel have used this in the past to remove the outer plastic coatings on Coflexip pipe
Have a look at the Statoil pipeline repair tools as they may be suitable
January 22, 2008 at 7:32 pm #15509DepwaterParticipantThanks for the input… so now what do you know about doing NDT by ROV . What I’m talking about is location and inspection some thing a smart pig has found. Most likely the indication is going to be at the 6 o-clock position and it needs to be verified prior to a repair clamp is installed.
February 12, 2009 at 3:08 am #15510AnonymousGuestIt vas a very simple way to remove the plastic coats. Put first on aprox. 80 Celsius grade temerature. The plastic make soften, and you remove easily on the surface of the metal.

LISTEN…. I WILL EXPLAIN IT TO YOU!!!!!!! It’s called a hyperbaric chamber, you don’t want to use a gaseous substance so why use a chamber?? Why not use ROV tooling??? Start your research here.
And you’ve done (any repair or construction work???) it this way before?? guru? Don’t think so pal…..
