    RESEARCH ASSISTANT II

    The National Undersea Research Center (NURC) at the University of Connecticut’s Avery Point Campus in Groton, CT is seeking a full time Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) Engineer/Pilot. A self-motivated individual is needed to maintain, develop and pilot NURC’s ROV fleet to conduct underwater exploration and research missions throughout the United States and around the world. The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining and troubleshooting ROVs and related systems and preparing them to support a variety of undersea science sampling requirements. Developing, modifying and fabricating new equipment for sampling, imaging and data collection systems for ROVs to meet unique exploration and research requirements, as well as collaborating with other engineers, will be a critical activity. The person in this position will typically spend 60 days at sea per calendar year.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: The in*****bent should hold a Bachelors degree or higher in electronic engineering or a related field. However, substantial experience with ROVs, electronics, hydraulics or other undersea vehicle sub-systems maybe considered, particularly if do*****ented with training certificates or certified logbooks. Ability to read and produce detailed schematic do*****entation of vehicle systems is required. The in*****bent should also demonstrate the ability to work with others in a team environment as well as work independently. Aptitude with computers, especially Windows operating systems is required.

    DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Experience operating a variety of remotely operated vehicles (e.g. Deep Ocean Engineering’s Phantom series, Deep Sea System International’s Max ROV and Benthos MiniRovers) is desired. Experience and aptitude with sub-sea applications of high-low voltage electrical systems, electronics, system control software, fiber optics and hydraulics is desired. Experience with oceanographic sensors and related instrumentation, still and video photographic systems, physical sampling systems, AUVs and SCUBA is a plus. Experience with programming languages (C++, Visual Basic, Java) and other related software (e.g. Labview, Solidworks) is also desirable.

    SALARY RANGE: The starting salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications. This is a University of Connecticut position with a full benefits package and retirement plan and continued support for this position is contingent upon funding. This position has been established with an end-date and is subject to renewals.
