I hear that the government in their wisdom has confirmed that the tax reclaim system (seafarers) is going to be scrapped 31st December 2008. the story i heard mentioned that after that date no tax claims will be honoured, and more interestingly, the govmt is speaking with the shipping companies (which will include ROV operators etc) and are looking to reclaim up to 4 yrs of tax paid out to employees thru their pay checks. everyone better start saving ! 🙁

Is this just a story or do you have some hard evidence?? There’s no need to add to the abundance of scare mongering already circulating until the HMRC distribute their update in Dec 08.

Yep, I was aware that the HMRC collects tax.

If you ‘heard’ that.. can you please share with us the source, so that we may read the information also.

As mentioned above, there is so much talk around at present about this subject that hard evidence would be better presented here rather than posting unsupported hearsay.

The info came from our accountants. they have told us in addition to the previous post, that the govmt have to claw back all the cash funding for the banks etc, and this is one of many avenues they are pursuing. Bit of a coincendence that this started raising it’s head about the same time….
There are still options for avoiding having to pay the tax back.

Rather than word of mouth have you any hard facts……… I to have an accountant who has advised that the info from HRMC will not be available until Dec 08?? Unless you have hard facts available to post……..

what a shift! week to go now hurahh.

what the accountants did show us was the approved tax notice which will appear 9th December. this outlines the hows and whats and why of the seamans tax. main points are below:

1./ present tax claims including the last 6 yrs will be investigated.
2./ reclassification of vessels as follows:
MSV’s, DSV’s, supply vessels, Drillships are reclassed as floating platforms.
3./ Any period of time spent on a flotel etc does not count.
4./ Foreign port calls which are less than 72hrs are to be investigated.
5./ Time out of the country to maintain tax claim but not working will be excluded and investigated.

There is a large document regards marine crew which in summary says..quote" ships crew as in captain, master, mate (s), purser, able bodies" are still clasified as true marine crew by their qualification, and will remain tax exemt status"

bit of a mouthful but it appears that genuine ships crew are ok, it’s the rest of us that will get the letter shortly.

i will be home in a week, and if anyone would like the document, let me know, and i can post it out.

By the sounds of things guys,its time to up sticks and do a runner.Get the hell out of the multicultural hellhole,and tell Gordon shiteface brown to ram it where the sun dont shine….I would personally get out and let the
ferers try and catch me.The more everyone gives into these mothers the more they are going to rip us off…..The UK is now a facist police state.Did you know that??.

Why not post this document on here for all to see & confirm if it is 4 or 6 years the HMRC are going to pursue us for tax arrears as you seem to have contradicting info already posted on this thread??
