Tribesmen in Malaysia’s Sarawak state have reportedly rescued two surveyors who became lost in the jungle five days ago while mapping a route for a new gas pipeline.

Ismail Salleh and Rano Sani went missing last week from a 50-strong team surveying a route for the proposed 3 billion ringgit ($850 million) Sabah-Sarawak gas pipeline, AFP reported.

Semi-nomadic Penan tribesmen found the men while hunting in Saturday, the news service quoted the local Sunday Star newspaper as saying.

"How they got lost is still a puzzle. We will interview them soon, but the good news is that they are not hurt," local police chief Jonathan Jalin was quoted as saying.

The 500-kilometre pipeline will link fields near the town of Bintulu in Sarawak to Kimanis in Sabah. The provinces lie in the Malaysian sector of the island of Borneo.

My son is in the British Army and has done jungle training in Brunei, Sarawak and Borneo.

Guesss what? GPS doesn’t work in the jungle due to the dense tree canopy. Also due to the dense tree canopy you cannot see the sun so the wristwatch and matchstick method also doesn’t work.

Due to not being able to see the sun and being in permanent twilight at ground level there is NO orientation re direction.

What’s wrong with an old fashioned compass and map????? We never had GPS when I was in the mob, red pointy bit for north and white pointy bit for south. Not exactly rocket science, then again they were survey so nuff said!!!!!!!!!!!

they didn’t go out with pens and a4 pads eh or that would have been one quality survey report? they must have had an altimeter, compass and a map?
