How does one workas an ROV pilot in Norway and not get shafted 40% for tax as an Expat living 18 years in Thailand .I am being offered a lot of work in Norway but the tax rules are very unclear , i have spoken to Norway Tax Dept and UK agencies and Accountants and got severeal different views .Seems only PAYE payers on SSD can claim back Norway tax or work only 30 days in one year Tax free is only option otherwise its not a worthwhile proposition at all after spending money on OLF and Norway medicals is factored in The pay rate I am being offered as PT after 40% tax even with an 10% uplift is pisspoor.
I used to work regularly up to 2002 in Norway for Noweigan telecomms companies such as NERA and marine contractors HATVIKS and never had to pay Norweigan tax always paid in full offshore as a contractor.

Once you get into any tax system it is bloody hard to get out of it again, let alone claim back from another country that may not have a reciprocal tax agreement with the place.
best regards

June 4, 2009 at 12:48 pm #23524Norwegian_DudeParticipantDoes this only apply if you are a Payee? What if you have your own company in a foreign country and use that company to invoice the agency?
Anyone have some info on this as I’m off to Norwegian waters soon and I have a company in an Asian country.
Hehe, being a Norwegian living in Bangkok for 6 years I guess I’m even more screwed. Well, I am off the Norwegian tax system already (after 5 years)
Cheers

If your living in the UK or some other place were your also paying tax you may get some money back from the Tax man in Norway .
Why do you think there all ways looking for people to work in Norway .

I agree what you say. It does not matter if you work through an agency or direct. As a Payee right?
I mean, if you register a company say in Thailand and the agency hires you, or more correct, hire your company. Agencies I have been in contact with have offered me this. After the work is done your company send an invoice for the work and the money goes to your company and not directly to you. Norway cannot request tax on that as you are working through another company.
Aright, I agree, Thailand is not the best country to have your company registered as you will have to pay company tax to Thailand after this. However, there are plenty of other "tax free" countries you can set up your company and invoice the agencies.
Oh, well. Never taken any projects from Norway yet, but the Norwegian tax authorities cannot add income tax to the job you are executing as a consultant for that company. Hey, on your employment contract with your company you have a day rate of 10 USD 🙂
Maybe I’m talking crap. Comments welcome

June 4, 2009 at 4:22 pm #23528Ray ShieldsParticipantWorking in Norway can suit some and not others, it purely depends on your circumstances.
If you are in the UK and a UK taxpayer it can actually help to do some work in Norway. If you earn some money in Norway, it can keep you out of the 40% tax bracket.
I did 4 years working almost exclusivly in Norway and it averaged out at 28% tax, its not always 40% – its not that straight forward to calculate!

Thailand is my home but any company I use is a not a Thai company they are useless entities .I use UK registered companies but no agency will let me use them in Norway.June 5, 2009 at 8:39 am #23531Scott BeveridgeParticipantMore work for me 🙂

Why he asks…. Because for 29 years, I’ve been trying (with little success) to get ROV guys and gals to be more united and to develop some brass nuts for the sole purpose of standing up to the companies and agencies that SO BLATANTLY disregard us, in most cases, highly technical (what other service biz can boast having multi-skilled personnel?) blue-collar workers. There will come a time where you my friend will say, "I’ve had a gutsful of the way were treated as disposable employees and the massive amount of profit these same companies make off of our wages whilst doling out piss-poor pay package and usually no benefits (supt. rates SHOULD BE USD $1200.00 nett WORLDWIDE). Chill??? Nah, ah!!! And all you other "I’m awright Jack" types, let it be known that most supt. / supervisors see that trait within hours of first meeting / working with you….. Teamwork is lacking VASTLY in this industry BUT does exsist with the right management driving the ops. desk!
June 5, 2009 at 12:21 pm #23532outsiderParticipantDude,
7 years ago I ran a Ltd Company worked in Norwegian and British sectors on one contract, Norwegians taxed me on the whole lot! ❗
The argument was that as I was the sole employee all the money was coming to me in anycase irrespective of the fact my company invoiced my agent, my accountants comments would get this posting removed 🙁 basically if you work there bend over and say thank you Sir:evil:They will not assist you other than to send the bloody rule book or they did and if you do get any correspondance other than a demand for NOK you are doing well 😡
I suspect the situation has not altered…..
