Hmmmm… so I may have been correct in saying what I did on another thread (I don’t have the time to look for it right now…. limiited internet time) – but it’s something like: "is there going to be a slowdown again?"

Isn’t this not how it goes, theres work one week and not the next, boom or bust?

You can ALWAYS get ROV people (buy, you mean hire, or are you a slave trader, LoL) if you offer the right money. The right money for experienced people. Many agencies just send warm bodies out, but then end up with a bad reputation for not suppying qualified people. Agencies need to take their turn in persuading companies that they are not offering enough.

Agents also have to remember they are working for THEIR guys, not for the oil or service companies, some seem to forget that.

If you see on here you will see that theer are stil many jobs going, many are "urgent", last minute – either bacuse people aren’t available or they aren’t able to get anyone to work for the poor money.

True, correct, and continually frustrating at the time of press Ray. Well said… I haven’t gone on an agency job for a while due to the above. AGENCIES WORK FOR US!!!! NOT THE CLIENT!!!! WE WORK FOR THE CLIENT AND PRESENT OUR SERVICES ACCORDINGLY.

I agree totally with you guys about agencies, I have been in the business over twenty years and owned two agencies.

There are two main problems with agencies

    1. The Banks
The recruitment industry is worth over 21 billion a year in the UK
When I first started in the industry, you needed money to fund an agency. The banks saw the industry as a cash cow. So they started offering factoring, invoice discounting and some companies will even pay in advance on invoices. This brings me to my second point.

    2. De regulation
When I started, you needed a licence to work as an employment business or employment agency, now you don’t need anything and there is no regulation.
Any body can start an agency with no training or background in the industry.

This has led to hundreds opening up and all fighting for the same business, and because they don’t know about customer service and quality, they try to win business by under cutting all others. All this does is push down profit margins and salary levels for contractors.

Also because of my first point, many of them have lost sight of their values, and forget we work on behalf of the candidates.
Consultants are always under pressure to sell. sell. sell and achieve targets, which only lead to a poor service for the candidates.

They fail to realise that it does not mater how many positions you have on, with out the candidates you cannot make a sale.

    AndyStevo,

Thank you for your honest, frank reply. Hopefully (as in our industry), the incompetent agencies and agencies that collude with the clients for cheap labor will get weeded out during the lean times.
