We have seen a marked increase in the number of HMRC enquiries into SED and FED claims in the past 3 months. We could usually expect 2 a month, now it has increased to 5 or 6 each month. Most are fairly easily dealt with but some are not. We are now providing Fee Insurance to cover our costs should such and enquiry be made by HMRC.

Costs are low compared to the potential costs. Our existing clients pay an annual premium of £150 + vat per year which covers up to £75,000 of fee costs.

Please get in touch if you need some advice.

    Hi steve,
I take it that we are still entitled to SED if we are on a ship flying ROV’s in foreign waters , in the oil and gas industry 183 days away from home ?
I know that some individuals have ‘upset the apple cart’ by trying to claim whilst on a drilling rig or floatel semi and is still being debated BUT
I just need some clarity one way or the other without beating around the bush !
So far , all I have heard is ……………….. pending plus a good chance that The Inland revenue will ask for said rebates back dated to 2008 😕
I just want a yes or no 😯
Can you give the answer ?

I had a tax enquiry for 2006/07, the only year I have qualified for SED. I had to provide a covering letter, documnents to cover my time out of the UK, boarding cards, passport stamps, Seaman’s Book records, payslips etc.
I will give HMRC their due as the tax officer I dealt with was very helpful and fair. The letter arrived when I was offshore and I managed to get a deadline extension. No doubt it was stressful but fortunately I did not have to pay HMRC anything. Please do not ignore any request as they do not go away and with the country being broke, every little counts.
