I’m sure many might agree that the forum experienced a childish set of posts this morning. A pretty disappointing event to say the least.
All have since been deleted by admin.

    What happened?

An agency posted in this (an international ROV Forum) looking for Indian nationals to work in Indian waters and, because an admin didn’t manage to lock the thread soon enough, a good few members waded in and replied to the posting (contrary to employment forum posting guidelines), some adding derogatory comments until the thread had degenerated into a virtual kiddies slag fest! Some of our long standing members should have known better and done nothing other than advise a forum admin.

Now us adults can see why we have guidelines. The most effective one being:

    • Lock posts by agencies or ROV Operator/Owner companies offering work.

The guidelines were put in place, some time back, to mainly prevent those representing agencies and companies from having to justify each and every job posting they add.
So far it has worked very well but, as we clearly saw, if an admin does not lock a thread quickly enough a good few take the opportunity to jump on the bandwagon like a bunch of kids.

We (all site members) must not forget that, as far as membership and topics go, this is an International Website/Forum so if an agency wishes to post a job application requesting Indian Nationals for a job in India then they should be able to do so without fear of retribution.

Judging by what we experienced earlier I guess the average age of the forum must be dropping to below adult level. In which case maybe we should consider an ROV kiddies forum.

Most people hide behind online personas thinking that they can say whatever they want online and no-one will ever know who they are.

Not always the case. Maybe we should insist everyone is identified and uses their real name, see how brave they would be then to post messages 🙂

The actual job specified that MOHA was required so that means that anyone with this certificate can apply.

I work freelance with the agency concerned and have over 15 years experience in the industry. I do not apprieciate when jobs postings from Agencies or other companies have to be closed down due to other peoples stupid comments. After these postings are closed down it requires me to make an international phone call to find out about the job.

What we all must realise is that the ROV industry is a small industry and it is not to difficult to work out who the people making smart comments are. They are basically shooting themselves in the foot by what they are doing and some people in agencies do not forget this for a very long time.

Many people talk about having a Union. People with experience forwarding smart comments like this I do not think this will ever happen.

So why not give the option to lock that particular thread?

To the poster as that is the worst affending thread ROV Agency requirements it happens quite frequently.

Or make it a one post thread in that topic no replies at all.

Where did you hear that there was a Yuni0n forming in the ROV industry? First I’ve heard of it… You don’t mean this do you? http://www.irova.org/ If you do mean this (link) then perhaps you should re-read the home page and what it’s really about.

I feel Gogsie may be referring to past discussions on unions. As far as I am aware there is no drive towards forming an ROV union but there does appear to be some movement towards an Association being formed as Scott has pointed out.

Valid suggestions, but the issue with that is almost anyone could post any comment and lock the thread right away so that nobody could respond.
It’ll take a clever person than me to make such tweaks and for them to be effective without spoiling forum usage in general.

Of late we’ve (appointed admins) done a not too bad job of locking job threads.. this one slipped through the net. I have had dialogue with the OP and they are happy with the outcome.

In the interim if anyone sees a thread going out of whack please contact an admin and we’ll do our best to fix it in short order.

Be careful guys a certain ROV company worked out who i am from my posts on here last year and the OPs director has personally said to me that his company will never employ me again just in case I speak something negative about his organisation.

Since then I have been very careful what i say on here .

I do not see what is wrong with a good debate, seems to me there is far too much sensorship already.

The said post about HPRME did not mention HOMA until after they were questioned about their motives. They then clarified that all nationalities were welcome if they had a MOHA. So the Reply post Questioning HPRME was legitimate.

Seems to me always this site has become ROV Company World as opposed to what it was back in the early days, just a good open forum for ROV people.

Seems to me always this site has become ROV Company World as opposed to what it was back in the early days, just a good open forum for ROV people.

Back in the early days (back in 2000 and pre this site) we seemed to not have to put up with the immature sniping we are seeing here today. People in general were friendly and helpful. Whilst an element of that still prevails here today we have been forced to censure whereas year back it appeared not to be required.

Not sure what you mean by ROV company world…. Over the years (ten in fact) we have had to put up with emails from companies asking about the ID of posters or attempting to get me to remove threads because the information appears not to show their company in a good light. Each time the so called offending posts have been looked at and a decision has been made based on content, not on pressure from any source.
We never divulge the identity of any poster to companies, but would do so to legal authorities should an offence appear to have been committed.

With regards to the deleted employment thread. I deleted that off my own back. There was no outside request. Plus. Our guidelines are quite clear on the reasons behind my actions. Whether a response it is deemed to be relevant or not, members should start a new thread under employment discussions to discuss various job posts, not reply to the job post itself. That little gem of a guideline is posted at the top of each employment forum for Agencies and Companies.
The original job post was also deleted (as per guidelines) because the OP did not supply sufficient contact information either. Then OP posted later with all the required information and the topic was locked by an admin.

We have always been proud of our record of giving people a place to debate our industry. What we are not here for is to offer a place for people to start flame wars and basically slag off other posters. The guidelines clearly state that anyway and to use this site you will have seen a copy and agreed to them.

It’s a free world. If people don’t like the way things are being looked after around here they are of course free to say so, leave or start their own ‘improved’ discussion forum.

We’ve been here a few times before.
It doesn’t matter what we do around here.. there will always be people that aren’t happy… the way of the world no doubt.

    Childish behaviour in the forum?

    Yes.

And it’s not just about replies to agencies’ posts, it’s a more general attitude.

Unfortunately having a decent level of discussion and useful/helpful comments is getting harder, although some good people are still there.
Personally, I prefer to stick on helpful answers/discussions and avoid stupid debates, it’s funny how some people love to waste their time.

The fact remains, if you dont want to hear what other people think and have to say, then keep your comments to yourself in the first place! Seems a lot of people want to say what they think and that if someone has the cheek to reply saying something they dont like, then they are childish or should be abused in some way. I still say the questions I read about the HPRME post were perfectly legitimate? or does no one care about keeping standards within our industry??

I think it is a good idea to make people people put their real names up, and also they should have to verify when joining the account with a credit card or bank card, so the name can be 100% verified, as a lot of the childish behaviour would disappear then.

Questions are perfectly legitimate, but we ask that people start a new thread about it. In the past, people posting job adverts were put off by some not very nice replies to their post. We do not want to put people off advertising jobs.

Point taken, and understood, I do think it is a good idea about names though, too many people hiding and throwing in hand grenades here there and everywhere.
