Hey folks Current serving forces looking for an ROV Career

Hey folks,

this is my first post i would like to say hi and ask a few questions.

I am currently serving in the Royal Navy and have done so for close to 10 years (time flys when your having fun lol)

Im looking to get into the ROV sector – being from aberdeen and spending most of my 10 years at sea – Offshore seems perfect for myself

I have several qualifications – The RN dont believe in handing out civilian accredited qualifications for my branch!

I am a warfare rating to trade (mainly dealing with navigation, radar, torpedoes etc)

i have some qualifactions from the navy to name a few (NVQ L2 in performing eng ops and ILM L2 in leadership & management)

Now over the past 5 years i have also been dealing with hyrdaulics, Air, N2 upto 276 bar this inlcudes 2 valve isolations and defect rectification. though i dont not have any qualifications to prove this (this is more of an OTJ training)

What are my chances of securing a job with my relative experience and on the job training? wIve read that most people on here dont favour the ROV Courses and prefer a more hands on OJT approach.

Im not looking for a company to put me through all the courses as the navy gives me both time and money to do the relevant courses i.e BOSIET

Also would and could anyone recommend me courses to do in the near future to be my chances

Well i would say very very easy really for you living in ABZ.

Any course with Mech & Elec or Electronics and Hyd with City and Guilds
is the way to go.

HNC can also be done distance learning.

Drop by all the offices and ask to speak to HR in Person and if good timing permitts ROV Operations Manager and then send CV’s by e-mail after you been around.

If it’s any consolation, I came from a similar background and secured employment with a large outfit in the early 90’s

Had no ROV specific certifications, but timing was the key here, as I believe it is now. Also, demand is high and companies realise the calibre of personnel from our Navy.

Quals: anything with an element of electronics…As already mentioned HNC, and consider Mechatronics.

I think that your chances of securing a job are pretty favourable right now.

Thanks for the info guys much appreciated my NVQ L2 did involve maintenance of electrical systems bu tbh I’m more happy working with high pressure systems

It’s crazy how the navy doesn’t give you appropriate quals it’s trying to get as much as I can within my remains year.

HR dept seems to be a nightmare always goes to answer machine lol so a trip to them should do the trick

If anybody has contact with the right people that I could send my cv off to and get some pointers it would be much appreciated

Hi gents,

Not sure i agree with you about the Navy not providing qualifications.
I have recently completed 22 years service and managed to get a HND and a first class BSc (Hons) Degree in Electronic Engineering. Plus Prince 2 Project Management, 17TH edition wiring regs………..the list goes on.

Despite this i have not found it easy to break into the offshore sector.
I paid for my own BOSIET, MIST, BASE, Sky-Scape qualifications.
Remember you have the STCW95 quals which are very marketable.

I have a telephone interview today at lunch with Oceaneering for a ROV role.
Seems like they are recruiting heavily.
Fortunately, i also have an interview with Frugo in Amsterdam next Tuesday 26th. An interview this Friday with a Company in Aberdeen called META. And something with another company on the 5th July.

Despite all this and lots of previous effort invested making applications i have yet to be successful.

So i wish you luck Shipmate and off course will sign post you to anything that i hear about.
Just remember that previous comments about timing seem to be very true. Because despite being qualified up to ‘Ying Yang’ it’s still not easy to get into.
