    Hi Guys/Gals,

I am looking at going back to sea (after 15 years in the RN) and a few years shoreside as a fibre telecoms specialist. I have had a look at the various training schools around and would appreciate your advice on which you guys reckon is the best, with the best chances of getting some work etc. I live in the UK and to be honest it is cheaper to fly to the Manila and do the course out there with SUBNET, than to go to Aberdeen.

There are three of us who would like to do this and would appreciate any help, advice or don’t bothers you can provide.

    Many thanks.

have a good read throughout the various post on this site, the general consensus is the courses are an expensive way back to the dole queue. Apart from your fibre telecoms skills do you have any other electrical/electronic or hydraulic background ? If you do, start sending off CV’s and don’t waste your money on courses.
    Good luck

    Piedpiper,

Thanks for the info. My background is in weapon systems, the electrics, motors, hydraulics, pneumatics, bits and pieces of sonar etc as well as internal coms systems to name a few. The other guys are aircraft techies, with more of a pinkie background, electrics and electronics etc.

I take it there is the possiblilty of getting the rov training "on the job".

    Thanks again

with your background don’t bother with the course, it would be a waste of money, same goes for your mates. Just get your CV out there and start phoning/knocking on doors. Good time right now, things are starting to pick up, even UKPS are taking on trainees.

Again good luck, and look at all the other posts regarding new starts.

    http://www.globalmarinesystems.com/

If you want to work with optic cables, think Global have ROV pilot/jointers

    Thanks alot guy’s.

I appreciate all the help/advice. If any one else has any more to offer that will be greatfully received as well.

I will give it a shot and see how we get on, I just need to re-hash the old CV now.

Will post back here and let you know how things go.

Best of luck in whatever you do next.

With your background you’ll be suited to a company like Global Marine Systems. As Deepdown said, they have multi-skilled ROV Pilot Tech/Fibre Optic Jointers. You’d start as a JST, Junior Ship’s Tea-boy I think it means!?!…..or maybe Junior Systems Tech.

Anyway, dont pay for the course, they’ll put you through your ROV course and the jointing course……why waste your ££££ when they’ll pay for it.

Think they recruit through Subservpro sometimes, [url]www.subservpro.com

I heard they’ve lost a lot of guys to the Oil & Gas industry in the last year so Im sure they’ll be taking on. Once you’ve got a few years in and the stick time you’ll be able to sack them off and earn some decent ££££ like everyone else 💡

    Thanks argh!!

The fibre and copper is no problem, been doing that for years, the biggest snag is the getting into the industry. I will have a look at the site info you posted and get my CV on there as well.

    All the Best
