Hi guys,
Im brand new to this game in as much I am looking for employment within the ROV industry ofshore. I have noprevious experience in this field but do have experience within various fabrication aspects, domestic gas heating and plumbing fields. I also have approx 13 years experience as a police officer within specialist duties (as if this really matters).I have compiled a cv based on the fact that I have never completed a cv since I left school 21 years ago. I would be very grateful if anyone could take the time to critic my CV and tell me where I may be going wrong or if I am flogging a dead horse.
Is this a reasonable request. By the way this site is brilliant for brushing up on relevant info. Well done.

March 18, 2007 at 10:57 am #11104STUParticipantSorry I didnt see that section. However, I have already put a CV together that is virtually in the format as mentioned in that section. Would anyone experienced be willing to have a look at my CV via PM to see if I am flogging a dead horse.
Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

For potential ROV trainees, companies are generally looking for already experienced and qualified techs, either mechanical/hydraulic or electronic/electrical or indeed a combination e.g. ‘mechatronics’, electro-mechanical tech or whatever they call it now.
Structuring your CV to suit whatever target market you are applying for jobs in makes sense (i.e ROV industry in this case). However, if your experience/qualifications don’t match the basic requirements of a particular industry then no amount of tweaking the CV will help. You didn’t say if your technical experience i.e. plumbing etc experience is most recent or if it was before your Police career. As you say, your Police experience will not have much relevance, unless perhaps you were working in a technical support staff role etc.
Not trying to put you off, but even though there is a shortage of skilled personnel in the offshore sector, competition is still fairly tight for trainee places. Nothing wrong in going for a total career change, even in your late 30’s, plenty people do so successfully, but generally you first need to get some relevant training and qualifications to do so.
Note that the short ROV courses advertised by various places will not turn someone into a tech in 4 weeks, and some unscrupulous places will happily take your money for a course with little screening for suitability, even if it has little chance of leading to employment.
good luck
tempMarch 18, 2007 at 3:11 pm #11106STUParticipantI really appreciate the replies guys. Having made contact with a few via email I can see wher I have gone wrong with my CV in explaining or not certain things and the order I have put them. Stupidly I have ommitted my experience of working part time with a company installing Hiab Crane units for wagons. I didnt mention this as it is unpaid work for the benefit of getting hydraulic experience and knowledge.
Thanks

A good CV helps but you will find in this industry there is a lot of old boys network.
It’s not what you know it’s who!March 24, 2007 at 9:34 am #11108STUParticipantI have noticed this and heard of it on a regular basis. Infact, I have even heard of companies who give a bonus to employees for recommending people for a post. Saying that, it wont put me off cause I really want this and Ill just keep chipping away.

If you live in the NE why not give SMD a try they have a lot of new builds on the go and could be looking for personnel to assist with these.

March 25, 2007 at 6:46 am #11113stinky-bumParticipantSure you want to join the ROV industry…… Being an ex-policeman im sure you would get loads of stick and to top it all off most of the guys offshore are criminals anyway.
(Not that im speaking from experience at all….. 😈 )March 25, 2007 at 9:20 am #11114STUParticipantIf I were put off by criminals, I wouldnt have been a copper in the first place. But hey, who’s to say that I aint a criminal.
