All you ROV Guru’s out there!!!!

Hello gentlemen,

I am an electrician currently working in the offshore industry. Im wanting to get into what I believe to be the adequate title of ROV support tech?!? Iv done some digging around and read through countless websites but Ive found this one to be the most helpful so Im going to submit my questions and hope you can give me a hand by answering them. Id like to be the guy that supports and maintains the ROV itself ie maintenance, breakdowns, fault finding etc If this means having to get my flying tickets then so be it up if i dont have to i wont. Im currently looking into doing my hnc in electrical engineering will this be beneficial to me or could i get a start without it. Dont get me wrong im willing to start as a trainee and learn my rov’s im only 24 so iv got time. Just would like some direction as to where to look what courses i should do and whats my chances of getting a trainee staff position. Also if anybody knows of the day rates / salaries for these sorts of positions and anybody that wants to give me a job that’d be great :). Thanks for reading and thanks for your time

Not a guru, but I know this, to be only rov technician support does not necessarily mean you even need your rov pilot/technician certificate, but you do need an incredible amount of technical know-how about every single component of the ROV, you need to be the MacGyver of ROV. Flipping through wire diagrams, into transformer oil filled transformer boxes; electronic pods even have initiative and know how to invent new circuitry to get some type of add-on equipment to work. I think it takes a few years of experience to get to this level by a very driven and mentally unstable detail to perfection to become this. I think once you are there it must be something wonderful.

I do not think too many contract work ask for someone like this, they just want rov pilots and a rov supervisor

maybe try and look for work in companies where they put ROV’s together.

Sub-Atlantic are currently looking for electronics techs. Quite a few of them at that… If you want to get into ROVs that would be a good stepping stone to learn more.

The salary… ehm, well don’t be too disappointed if it’s a lot less than you expect haha. Keep in mind it’s not an offshore job though – just a stepping stone in that direction.
