" US coast guards are searching the Gulf of Mexico for at least 11 oil workers missing after an explosion and fire on a drilling platform.
The rig was still burning hours after the blast on Tuesday night 52 miles (84km) south-east of the Louisiana port of Venice.
Coast guards spoke of conflicting reports on the number of missing, which ranged from 11 to 15.
Seven injured workers have been airlifted to hospitals.
Workers evacuated the Deepwater Horizon, a semi-submersible rig operated by Swiss-based contractor Transocean, after the blast at around 2200 on Tuesday (0300 GMT Wednesday). "…

The newspaper cited a local official as saying that all of the offshore drilling platform’s 126 workers were alive and safe. The Coast Guard told AFP that it was working to verify that all the workers had indeed escaped safely from the explosion."…

Thanks for the updates. Much appreciated
April 21, 2010 at 11:07 pm #27493Mark DuPriestParticipantFYI: …"Since 2001, there have been 69 offshore deaths, 1,349 injuries and 858 fires and explosions in the Gulf, according to the Federal Minerals Management Service, which did not break down the cause of the deaths, the severity of the injuries, or the size of the fires and explosions (Occupational Safety Health Agency {OSHA})"…
States of Texas/Louisiana/Mississippi/Alabama likely individually do that specific to their State.
http://www.komonews.com/news/national/91706459.html…"Prior to Hurricane Katrina (Aug, 05) & Rita (Sep, 05) there were about 600 platforms & 150 drilling rigs total in the GOM. About 170 were lost to some degree and of those, about 30 were lost completely."…

Wednesday, Apr 21, 2010
BP today offered its full support to drilling contractor Transocean Ltd. and its employees after fire caused Transocean’s semisubmersible drilling rig Deepwater Horizon to be evacuated overnight, saying it stood ready to assist in any way in responding to the incident.
Group Chief Executive Tony Hayward said: “Our concern and thoughts are with the rig personnel and their families. We are also very focused on providing every possible assistance in the effort to deal with the consequences of the incident.”
BP, which operates the licence on which Transocean’s rig was drilling an exploration well, said it was working closely with Transocean and the U.S. Coast Guard, which is leading the emergency response, and had been offering its help – including logistical support.
Transocean reported the fire earlier today on the rig, located approximately 41 miles offshore Louisiana on Mississippi Canyon block 252, saying that a “substantial majority” of the 126 personnel on board were safe, but some crew members remained unaccounted for. A number of personnel were reported to be injured .
Years ago I seem to recollect a similar type of statement having been issued by another oil company after the Piper Alpha disaster.
The key point of the statement being … employees
You can probably forget any notion of that the phrase (employees) includes any ‘sub contractors‘ or ‘freelance’ personnel, the bulk of which make up any offshore operation.
As experienced in the UK… those that are not employees of the operator are in an entirely different league as far as ‘full support’ or compensation is concerned.
