Fugro Middle East have started bringing in new recruits for a months paid trial at their base in Abu Dhabi, before offering a contract. This allows them to assess what kind of person you are, as well as your technical abilities.
As a member of this elite club, I found this to be a great introduction to the industry, it’s people and the way things works in the real world. It allowed me to weigh up the pro’s and con’s before I commit my future to the industry.
From what I gathered during my stay, this proves to be a very successful way of doing things, and maybe other companies should try it.
What does everyone think?
I agree a good idea. I would go further why not give all new starts a fixed one year contract. Gives them a fair chance to impress over a few trips and also gives the company a chance to get rid of no hopers.
Only problem in FSME who does the assesing????? One name springs to mind who has been in the industry since the year dot and is still clueless.
yeah its a great place for experience out there, get the full exposure to all sorts of jobs (survey wise anyway). But they keep on losing key personnel time and time again…they will keep dangling carrots until guys realise its no hope for better conditions and leave for greener pastures.

yeah , i’m beginning to think that myself, and getting paid in US$ isn’t helping. I’m enjoying it though and getting to learn a lot so i’m not prepaired to desert for a while yet , the pro’s outway the con’s.
A month probation is quite reasonable I’m thinking or one crew change.
A year contract for greenhorns is too long and can be expensive to the ROV company if they turn out to be planks ! And I don’t necessarily mean clueless just not the right stuff 🙂
