Hi have just been contacted by Fugro with regards to a trainee opportunity in the near future. 😀
What are they like to work for? I know they are meant to be among the better companies to work for, but some more info would be great!
They are also paying 17k salary plus £70 per day offshore rate. I would be looking for 30k total per year to pay mortgage etc…….. and is getting that money at the start feasible?
Do they operate abroad where there is more chance of getting TAX FREE? 😛

Not worked for Fugro but never heard any complaints. Check out their website for info, there’s a downloadable mag they do called Cross Section which gives the recent news, you’ll see that they work world wide.

Have been invited for interviews a couple of times but they couldn’t meet my salary expectations so I never went, they don’t appear to be the best payers although working through an agency for them seems to get reasonable money.

Check out other companies, there’s one in these forums paying £280 a day for trainees, that’s another £20k more than your deal based on 180 days offshore.

At the end of the day if you’ve no experience or technical background and they’ve offered you a job, take it, learn the ropes then look for the big ££.

See ROV Pay Rates THIS WEBSITE!!! You young fellas really need to do more research and R-E-A-D-I-N-G prior to taking jobs on… The industry is not Uni0n-controlled but us older guys have done alot to get the pay rates up and we intend to keep them there if not get them higher by the week!!! 🙄 On the other hand there’s the young guys living beyond their means (if I may be so bold to surmise) taking on a pittance. I have no pity for you…

You will find the current pay rates on the rates table on here as well as on the Fugro Rovtech merger thread. Did you not bother to find out about them BEFORE applying??

New to the industry, you will NOT earn big bucks. As a trainee you can still expect £30k a year which is still a damned good pay for a trainee! This assumes you work 6 months in the year which you more than likely will not do in the first year at least. So if you cant afford to earn lesst than £30k, you are going to have to cut back or rely on savings until you get established.

You will be working in the North Sea, West Africa, Northern Africa, Egypt, and anywhere in between. You will only get your tax back if you work onboard a ship and do at least 6 months a year outside of the UK, I very much doubt you will qualify for at least your first couple of years.

FROV are taking on 8 trainees every couple of months, mainly ex-Forces but all technically qualified/experienced people only. They dont want to teach people how to become an Engineer, they want to teach engineers about ROVs.

Training used to be done in Aberdeen but has now been farmed out to the Fort William centre.

To be offered ANY trainee job in ROVs is a feat in itself with the amount of people applying!

If you work 100 days a year you will get £17k + £7000 (£24k). If you do 150 days, thats £17k + £27.5k. Realistically you will not do 180 days in your first year, as a trainee there are a limited number of places you can be sent and so many trainees to try and squeeze in.

Ask them if you have the choice of Option 1 or 2. Option 1 is a consolidated wage where they will pay you for 156 days of work whether you work them or not. That would probably be a better choice for you as you will be guaranteed offshore days each month whether you work them or not. Quick calculation, that will get you just over £27k a year guaranteed.

Your pay should also go up slightly after 6 months of work.

Up to you to work out whats best, can you get a job onshore earning you over £30k a year with half the year off? And wont you also be getting a pension from the RAF?

Well said Ray and as for the questions concerning working for Fugro, they’re "not bad" to work for. As far as pay goes (throughout the industry) YOU CUT YOUR OWN DEALS NOBODY’S GONNA DO IT FOR YOU – and hopefully on the high side…

Mate dont be put off by some of the negative comments on here, ive only been in the industry 2 years and trust me you will have no trouble getting more than 180 days after your first year, but the others are right about one thing, take whatever offer you get and then worry about the dosh, i get emails everyweek about working for other companies the key is to get your first year/pilot tech sorted out.

About the tax situation even if you do less than 180 days on a ship you can go on a holiday or leave the country to make up for the days you need, my advise is to contact an accountant who deals with Seamens tax, this is the rule we are covered by that enables us to claim our tax back.
