    Hello All,

Hopefully somebody out there can give me a little advice….

I have recently started working on a ROV support vessel out of Ghana. 4 weeks on and 4 weeks off. I thought I would be able to claim my tax back through seafarers deductions. I looked through the info on the Inland revenue site and I seem to meet all of the criteria.

But now a colleague who is in the same boat as me (no pun intended), says that all of the money we are expecting to claim back will go to the Ghanian government and that we will not be eligible to claim it back?

    Any one have any ideas?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Ghana is on the list of countries were local tax applies. However I doubt that Ghana has exactly the same tax structure as the UK and you’ll probably find that only a percentage of your tax goes to Ghana. Similar to many long term jobs in Angola. As with Angola it maybe the case that your employer only declares a certain salary for your position also, which limits liability also. Hopefully anyway.

Unfortunalty, the list of countries were local tax is being taken grows every year.

Check your contract and talk to your employer as they should be able to tell you what they will be deducting at source and passing on to the Ghana-an Tax authorities.

Years ago, when there was more money freely sloshing around, this kind of tax was often sucked up by the companies but these days they are more likely to pass the buck to your account.

Far better to clear this up at an early stage, with those that credit your account, than face a shock later down the line.

thanks for the replies 225 and James. When I get home next I’ll look into it and give the pay dept. a call(who knows when that will be?..They are getting their moneys worth out of me…).

I’ll post any conclusions I come to here.
