From our long running poll this year, which asked how many days people put in during 2007, it seems that the overwhelming result is (so far):
- *175-200 days
So if you are looking at getting into the ROV game… once you are established, look for days away as above.
The figures don’t take into account the state of the industry this year but 2007 wasn’t a bad year by any means.

If you fall into that bracket you’re probably right.
That’s way too many days away IMHO, but then that life style works for some…. so I’m not going to knock it. Horses for courses as they say.August 6, 2008 at 11:02 am #18349OufaParticipantI need to get a life!!! 😆 😆 😆

Escuse me, but i have an opportunity to enter the ROV world with fugro, and i didnt understand your first messag in this thread…..so please tell me again how many days do ROV people can live their "Normal" life (as an average)thanks
oufaAugust 6, 2008 at 6:17 pm #18350SteveParticipantYour normal life is up to you
August 6, 2008 at 6:19 pm #18351SteveParticipantP.S as james’s post look around 170-180 as contarctural days that works out 2 weeks on/off or 4 weeks on/off but expect to do a lot more if works busy!
August 7, 2008 at 5:12 am #18352OufaParticipantMy Contract states that it will be 3 weeks on and 1 off………..and i expect it to longer 🙁
I am not Moaning man…..i am just asking more experiensed people.:)August 7, 2008 at 7:38 pm #18353James McLauchlanParticipantMy Contract states that it will be 3 weeks on and 1 off………..and i expect it to longer 🙁

If so that’ll work out around 244 days a year (ish).Even time is a fair contract. Companies may try to get people to do more to suit the current shortage of manpower, but that should only come with increased income in your favour not theirs.
If you don’t like the idea get out of the contract.
August 8, 2008 at 11:27 am #18354OufaParticipantThanx alot man….i will see what i can do.
But they are telling me there that this is the contract "FUGRO" egypt has, its not like i can negotiate on this matter, also i didnt mention that i am not paid that good either….i mean for an offshore job…..even for a trainee….i am only getting paid $520 as a monthly basic and $40 per offshore day and $28 per workshop day.August 8, 2008 at 12:43 pm #18355sedcoParticipantOufa, are you Egyptian?
If you are not, you are getting screwed.
If you are, it may be the going rate in Egypt.
Whichever, Fugro will probably still bill you out to the client at close to full rates.
August 8, 2008 at 4:02 pm #18356OufaParticipantYes man…..I am Egyptian, but still i think this is a very low salary i am offerd, compared to other Oil & Gas servise companies here in Egypt.
What about the 3 weeks to 1 week…..does this has to do anything with being an egyptian too????

Egypt or not, on a global scale it isn’t the industry average time on/off period.
So in that respect it’s not good either.August 13, 2008 at 2:01 pm #18358rovstuffParticipantOufa wrote

As James said "Egyptian or not" depends on you. So, if you know there are betters chances in Oil & Gas services companys in Egypt, why do you accept such a contract?
Fugro Egypt have some hard time getting ROV people for Egyptian jobs because of the sh….. conditions they "offer" on that job. Maybe you can make them start to consider better contracts/conditions.
Remeber it will always depends on you, you have the final word…….
CheersAugust 13, 2008 at 3:47 pm #18359luckyjim37ParticipantIt does seem a little steep on the time away to time at home ratio. However; if you are wanting to get into the ROV game then it may be your easiest route. Do a year then try and move onto another company I do know of one Egyptian Pilot who managed this and last I heard he was doing ok.
The problem you are going to have is that the rates for Egyptian Pilots from FUGRO Misr will be based on an Egyptian cost of living and lifestyle the same as why there are thousand of Philipino deck hand around the world working for what many see as very little.
It is your choice at the end of the day take the contract and gain experience and then move on or try another position with another company in the oil and gas industry if you feel you will get a better deal.
I do remeber a lot of the Egyptian guys having hassle with Sapesco(prior to FUGRO Misr) over rates and conditions when I was down there and they either put up with it or left.
Either way good luck.
