Hi all,

currently considering training in ROV just trying to weigh up the pros & cons at the moment.

I currently work offshore in the Rope access / NDT field but i am looking to add another string to my bow as rope access is seasonal and gets quiet from November – April.

I read a post previously that said that ROV was also seasonal but it did not specify the quiet period, so when does ROV work tend to go quiet?

Also with regards to training, i am looking at the underwater centres premium package, does the quals gained on this course put you in a good position for employment at the end of it or not? what other alternatives are there?

If you are working the North Sea, the quite period for ROV’s is the same – November to April.

Come to think of it, it also quitens down in the Far East at the same time for the Monsoon Season.

It may sound great doing a ROV course and starting a new career however the industry needs individuals who have recognised electrical/mech/hyd training or experience. Getting into the industry without these will only make you struggle to progress but also lessen your chances of getting invited back.
Make yourself the best you can be. If you are currently employed offshore (good point in itself) maybe do HNC at college or similar in a discipline that interests you then consider the switch. Also remember you would be back to trainee level and a probable wage drop to boot. Careful consideration me thinks…
