APPARENTLY THERES PLENTY OF HAMMERHEAD SHARKS TOO BUT I HAVNT SEEN ANY OF THEM YET EITHER. I DO FANCY USING THE REP AS BAIT THOUGH UNTIL I CAN AT LEAST SEE ONE

LOVE THE SUN ESPECIALLY WHEN ITS FREEZING IN NORWAY. I LIKE IT DOWN HERE

HAVNT NOTICED ANY SIDE EFFECTS WITH MALARONE AND I STOPPED TAKING THEM 7 DAYS AFTER WE WENT OFFSHORE. ONLY THING I NOTICED WAS THAT MY DREAMS OF NAKED WOMAN WERE BECOMING MORE FREQUENT.

    Flyingduck,

Don,t worry about the mosquito while offshore.

Do worry about the sharks, Sea snakes, Pirates, ect.

About your dreams about naked women? ‘Thats too much information’

Have a safe time in Angola its not as bad as Nigeria.

Flying duck how long were you at the airport?

At Luanda Airport it is like malaria central, made worse by uk airports authorities preventing you carrying Liquids in hand Luggage (as it was prior to November) so i couldn’t take the mosquito repellent. while you waited for the immigration to process your visas (2hrs +) the Mozzies have an open season on Humans.

but now you can take a limited amount of liquid in luggage which will be a help, i would get some high concentrate Deet wipes, from Boots to use in the airport, they are very effective, and you can see others getting plagued by the biting sods, & so far i have been ok.

i use Malerone 2 days before, stop when 7 days offshore, although it gets difficult sometimes, as the ship could be in/out of Luanda several times in a month.
so i do what i feel comfortable with, it’s your choice! but always have some Malerone spare just in case.

    cheers…………..

    & Be Well

Sorry to hear your bad experience….were you on malarone at the time?

When I worked Angola I found taking Malarone just before I hit the sack was much better than dragging my sorry arse around during shift…although those physicodelic dreams were entertaing.

Any one else have better luck taking Malarone before kip?

I tried everything – before bed, after breakfast, lunchtime. Still felt like a bag of crap the whole time I was taking malarone.

Didn’t have that problem with the old doxycyclene and Novaquine. But they stopped selling them as they were VERY bad for your liver. Took them 15 years to figure that out mind you.

Makes me wonder what they’ll say about malarone in 10 years time.

And as to this whole ‘blood test’ thing by the companies to ENSURE you’re taking the malarone – call the chopper! I’m going home.

Larium is sometimes forbidden offshore by the employer and/or client. Seems to make some people to jump over the rail.
The advance of Larium is that you have to take 1 pill a week only.
The disadvantage is that you have to start taking Larium 3 weeks ahead of going to a malaria area and to continue for 3 weeks more after leaving that area.

Malarone is a more modern drug and gives better resistance against malaria.
The advance of Malarone is that you have to start taking the pills only 1 day ahead and have to continue for 7 days after leaving the malaria area.
The disadvantage is that you have take 1 pill a day and that it makes you feel less fit.
Another side effect of Malarone is that it will cause you to have less white blood cells what makes you more sensitive for infections or other things.

Last year I worked in Papua New Guinea and was taking Malarone as did a collegue. He had a soar throat suddenly and this happened to me 2 days later.
A few days later I had an eye infection. My left eye was nicely covered with green slime. The medic gave me some antibiotics what I had to put in my eye twice a day. After appr. a week my left eye was fine again but than my right eye started having the same infection.
At this moment I stopped taking Malarone and felt much more fit within a day. My right eye was ok again (the eye makes its own antibiotics). Also my throat was ok again.
I informed my collegue and he stopped taking Malarone too which solved his thoat problems.

With nearly all the countries in West Africa from what information I can gather as being at High Risk for Malaria.

There being a lot of projected work in the region. (which I have avoided so far) It looks inevitable that a lot of us are and will be working there in the future.

It seems a lot of companies will send personnel to these countries without a lot of prior warning as they do around the rest of the world, which would not allow you to start prescribed medication.

What advice do the guys that work out there in the region have to give regarding Malaria?

    best regards

    Thinsub

Ummmm… not , not, I won’t be going there… LONG off my list of places I’d nary consider to work… BTW – Lemon grass works well as a mozzie deterent

    Ron,

There’s a few other side effects that some malaria prophylactics have such as liver or kidney deterioration. Make 100% sure of what your taking from your doctor.

I had my medicin through the Travel Clinic, a department of the Port Hospital in Rotterdam.
They gave me my vaccinations and did a full health check.
Malarone is probably not officially registered or so because I had to sign some letter for it which was not the case for Larium.
