Technical Interviews

Hi everyone,

I am soon to go for a technical interview for a trainee position. Can anyone advise me what to expect? The company tell me it will last about an hour and a half. I have an HNC in engineering (22 years in the RAF on aircraft and software, avionics by trade)

Company is iTech7.

If its not been changed recently the interview is very informal, no panels, no arkward questions etc….although still treat it proffesionally. You say you have an HNC and have a background in avionics so therefore your ok with your electrical/electronic……..you’ve really not got anything to worry about with regards the technical bit. It’s not 1.5hrs, there’s a presentation about the company/division then a personality test followed by about 15mins tech, 20mins personal.
It’s good to see qualified and experienced people coming in, I was beginning to think I was the only one!

had one interview with their HR, not really a formal type more of a laid back kinda environment know u n me type of thing but being a bit caution about it, they wanted to hold my original documents. Is that normal a practice?

but awaiting to make an arrangement meeting with their Operations Manager soon.

Diving has always been good mate "there is no such thing as a bad dive site only bad diver’s"

I had one of these interviews earlier this year, with the boat side of SS7. I was in the same position as you, i.e. Ex RAf, 22 years, blah, blah, blah.
Anyway, for someone with your experinece, the interview should be a walk in the park. You’ve done the hard bit, getting the interview.
Nothing more technical than naming a few components, and answering a few questions. Very informal. Just relax, be honest and you’ll be fine.
I was offered a contract within 2 weeks of the interview, although the contract they offer you is woolier than your average Welsh mountain sheep.(being Welsh I’d know!!!)
I think the industry realises what ex forces chaps like us can bring to the party.

Morning guys,

first many thanks to all who replied to my question, it was very much appreciated. Second, some feedback. The interview consisted of psychometric testing, mechanical reasoning and spatial awareness, followed by a 1 on 1 sesssion, identifying hydraulic and electrical components, and a brief chat on understanding of various aspects of the trade. It seemed to go OK, and now I wait for the next stage.

I am trying to get on ROV crews myself having spent 6 years working as a Cathodic Protection Technician.
I would be very interested to hear in detail what you were asked at your interview and how you got the interview in the first place.

Isn’t a good brew enough! 🙂
But on a more serious note, I happen to think that the forces electronic/electrical training has helped me immensely. Where else would you get 60 weeks of full time training, followed by further training on each aircraft/system you move on. It meant that you could be up to speed on a system far quicker than On theJob Training gives you, unless you happen to land lucky with your supervisor/trainer. You learn the "why" instead of just the "how" components do what they do.
But we digress.
Well done Keith on your interview. Hope it leads to an offer. Who knows, this time next year you could be sunning it up in West Africa 😕

Just another side to the whole interview thing.

I recently hired on full time to a big player and was told to access the web site for some ammo for the interview.

Heres me banging out a dozen possible Q&A scenerios….when the call came it appeared references had been confirmed and the decesion was made before I got the call..
An HR person with a little ROV background will be looking for work ethic and teamplayer…..in the case of us experienced lot alot will boil down to what the way you are precieved by the grown ups….just my two pee worth.

Oh yea …I gots a new job as an employee 😉

Hi guys, just a follow up for you. I had my second interview for SS7, where they used a personality questionnaire and also abstract reasoning tests to decide on who were going to be the lucky candidate, with the personality being the main driver for selection. As you may have guessed, I was unsuccessful 😥

Can anyone offer any advice as to what personality traits are ‘required’ for working ROV’s?
