Undersea Camera Selections?

I’m currently on my first ROV/AUV project. I research for a lab at a University.

We are in need of cameras for both moving AUVs under sea ice in Antarctica and motionless rods to monitor the bottom of the sea ice above. This will mean low visibility and temperatures.

I’ve been finding so many different camera systems, and I was wondering if anyone here has had good luck with any certain make/models.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Google Kongsberg, hard to find any better, real good low light and SIT, expensive but damn good

I prefer Insite, I find the support is much better than Kongsberg, and the Cameras are much better optically.

Kongsberg shipped their last SIT camera in 2006

Are you trying to upset the poor lad? Insite? Perfect example of how not to do it!

Kongsberg gets my vote. Although the stuff from bowtech and tritech tend to do what they say on the tin these days as well.

Great, this is good feedback.

I had been looking more into the Kongsberg 14-367 and West Tech (??) SDS3030, so this reconfirms I’m on the right track.

For the AUV application, we want to keep the power consumption low (maybe snapping pics periodically as opposed to video) and figure out what kind of connection the camera has.

For the static camera, power consumption and data feed aren’t very restrictive. As long as the bottom of the sea ice is clearly visible, we should be fine.

When you buy a new camera you can specify the type of connection you require to be fitted to the camera (within reason).
Kongsberg (for example) will fit a connector from a wide range of options to suit your application. In which case the camera will arrive from the supplier ready for use with your system.

Some cameras have a remote control option so that (should you wish) you can adjust some camera parameters externally without having to disconnect the camera or open the unit up.

In all cases the manufacturer can advise you of the best option by way of camera selection and connector choice.
