Who has an ROV Competency Certificate

A recent post on a recruitment ad on here asked that people have

* OPITO survival & UKOOA medical.
* ROV competancies certificates
* Must be able to work in UK and Africa

How many people presently working in the industry have compertency certificates, where did they get them from? Who issued them?

And don’t say IMCA – they are a trade organisation that publishes a set of guidelines, they do not certify anyone.

I got one, PT 1. Our company uses MTCS in the lake district for various training programs and also the competence scheme.
As you said IMCA issues guidlines and various companies base there schemes round them.

"Competency Packets" fall into the same category as "ROV Training Courses". The value is in the eye of the beholder — maybe worth your baht or not — and these are "FOR PROFIT" ventures. Buyer beware. Certainly, follow the money trail connection to any agency requiring the packet.

As noted elsewhere, it is quite proper for an agency to require your data in their form, an altogether different story if you are asked to do this under the pretense of some bogus "industry standard" that may simply be putting money in the agency coffer.

There are plenty of reputable agencies willing to place qualified candidates without requiring them to purchase "Competency Packets". And a little homework will show they service the same clientele as those which do.

Must be 7 or 8 yrs a go the company I was working for got a whole batch of plastic ATM style cards printed up.. A photo and a blurb about IMCA standards.. Think they cost about a Dollar each to make… Lot more than they were worth IMHO… Didn’t get any cert though.. Isn’t that what the ROV pilots log book is for ? Does anybody still have those ? Think I stopped filling mine out around 1993… Must be somewhere in the garage.. no fookers ever asked to see it anyhow…

What is the point of any of this if the companies can print whatever they want.. next they will be issuing ‘stripes’ to sew on your coverals..

A proper accredited sceme would be good as it would prove to the client that they actually had experienced crew.. not some chancers fitted in by the HR dept.. It would mean exp guys got paid and prevent trainess from being mis-represented But it will never happen…

I think the competency scheme is great. I worked really hard for a year to get my supv ticket. It was hard because my technical background was quite specific mending machines in a laundrette. Anyway, I am now able to go out with the respect the ticket gives me and show the old supervisors how things should be done. Don’t you just hate those long-in-the-tooth good ol’ boys who really know nothing and can’t accept new and easier ways of doing things?

Didn’t these all hail from the C & W days? If you had the certs you could earn an extra gold braid or maybe just half if you didn’t drink G ‘n T’s with the OM. They were issued by SubServ Ltd around 10 ‘ish + years ago, under the guise of being an IMCA affiliated, IMCA aligned cert and a requirement for working offshore. They covered HV, PT1, PT2, SE and SSE I think…maybe there is something new out on the street now?

As Turtle said, the money trail usually ends up at the agency, but one couldn’t draw conclusions and possibly link Subserv to SubservPro… 😉 😆

I think the ad shouts for a general ‘phish’ for peeps as opposed to a specific job anyway…but I stand corrected if the ad is updated with some more purposeful data.

I have never seen any other certificate.

I think you may have missed his invisible tongue in cheek quotes around his message 🙂

Being paid at one grade and being competent to carry out the duties of that grade are not the same – otherwise there would be a lot of people offshore getting paid a lot less!

Yep, issued bt Walt Disney, signed by M. Mouse. It ensures I attain the day rate I request. No questions. Even if I go out as Tech I get Slopervisor rate since that’s what I am (my cert says so) and going out as tech prevents me from earning Slops rate hence my reason for asking for and getting reasonable wonga. Also, agencies/ companies don’t even offer silly rates mentioned on here, you’re suckers if you take them.

What happens after the 3 year period??
More money for the competence company as they re-certify you for doing the same job.

It means they paid IMCA money to join as members. It means absolutely nothing. It does not make them any better or more qualified/authoritive that anyone else.
