Am I reading it wrong? Looking at the latest pay rate list;
Geosplurb Aus, S-Club 7 Aus etc get a pretty high day rate. What’s the score? Crippling tax rates in Aus maybe?
Do they hire Britz to work in these areas on these day rates???
I mean I’m not one to moan… Did some PLIB work many moons ago off Bondai beach, boy the views were fantastc 😀

As a general rule, no.
The Oz guys/uniOns/laws (whatever) make it pretty difficult for Brits to simply front up, scout around, and work down there. On the other hand Oz guys, working in the UK sector, seems to meet little resistance on that front.
Good on them I say. If they protect their own (home) work zone and we sit back and do nothing like that in the UK sector. If I were an Ozzie I would do exactly the same and exploit both markets, as many do.

April 20, 2007 at 12:40 pm #11620T-BoyParticipantMmmm, very well worded Jim, thanks tho’
Shame, fancied doing a trip down under to see what the industry is like.
I guess they want to work back in England to get closer to their old mother land 😆
Hohum….back to looking for a nice little quiet flatback that is going somewhere hot with a small ROV to play with for about 3 weeks…

But i guess thats the price you pay for living in such a great country and having the joy of having the best cricket team in the world, thought u poms would like that haha
But if anyone is interested in working here there is a shortage of skilled workers so getting a visa is pretty easy at the moment.

Well said dude. Tho’ kinda worry bout the drought(s). You can have yur cricket as well… prefer ruggers. Worked in the early 80’s offa Carratha for Woodside (Rankin p/form completion/commission) as an ROV guy AND a SAT tech (YES, double-bubble) construction (Uni0n) rates for 48 days straight thru….Go figure the numbers on that one (can anyone?). The whole point being is the tax man (I paid US tax – go figure – AND got it back) screwed the Aussies back then (albeit not too many were in the industry) and yes, the PDAA was as strong as the "wharfies" Uni0n if not stronger. Once again, the point being after I digressed is that the tax dudes have the power to screw you (us) more than ever down under. Ya’ need your tax write-offs and / or offshore biz accounts to work there for the big "bucks". But in the long run…. it’s a great place to work / live and I’m an American (anti-gun type)…
April 21, 2007 at 9:37 pm #11623David GrantParticipantWorking as an Australian offshore in Australia you have to pay tax. There is no 180 day rule or any outs there. You are taxed the same as every other Australian.
If you work in the North Sea as a British Citizen you can log your days and claim tax free over the 180 days spent offshore(not so the case in Oz)
I believe this is why the rates are higher in Oz so as to retain personel. It works out to be not much different for an Australian to work in Oz and pay tax or to work in the North Sea and not pay tax. Cash in hand at the end of the day is pretty much same same.
Getting visa’s for working ROV in Austalia and any other country is pretty easy at the moment and should stay like this for quite some time.
April 21, 2007 at 11:44 pm #11624back6Participantthere is a plethora of new wells and fields that are up to be functioning in the next three years in the waters off Exmouth the North West cape. You have the Stybarrow , vincent and van gough .
A bit further north they have the pluto field and upgrade on Perseus / angel.
The local ROV companies have gone ape s**t at recruiting ex submariners, navy , RAAF, street sweepers and toilet cleaners as potential pilot techs.
On average the ROV pay is now roughly what can be made working on vessels and rigs in a trade position.but the construction averages an extra $175 per day…so there are plenty of opportunities.Exchange rates vs pounds is good, tax is 47 cents per dollar,
May 10, 2007 at 6:28 pm #11625AnonymousGuestDon’t bother guys.
Stay at home Australians are doing what they’re good at
all the nepotism, cronyism and all other ‘isms. I say go to the world; working as little as possible while trying to claim all sorts of things. BTW the ROVs in Australia ARE NOT governed by any form of unionism although there are limp wristed moves to try and jump in on the back of diver’s/MUAs agreements.I have had to work out of Australia due to the limited amount of work here and have found it so far to be much better due to the lack of crap you have to put up with.
And everyone’s correct about the tax by the way.
May 10, 2007 at 9:03 pm #11626Andy ShiersParticipantSo what you are saying is …………………………………
