Hi. I have resently moved to Australia and discovered there are no ROV Agencies for work as we know in Europe.
I am now interested in starting one to fill this gap, and would like to hear from any Skill ROV crew interesteded in going thru an agent in Australia. Any companies that would be requiring experience ROV Personnel. And Anyone who has any usefull advice concerning this subject.
    Thanks

Hi, I think there is an agency in Australia called Submec Offshore in Perth, good bunch of guys I am told and good payers. I am not sure how the unions and agency thing works though, there must be an agreement for freelancers?

Not really an agency but a tooling and ROV support company. Shortly to be operating their own ROV’s (on order now).

My guess is once Submec get into operating their own systems being employed through them will be a slightly different story, as I suspect that they may back off a bit on the supply of personnel to third parties as they will have their own systems and ops to consider first.

My understanding (I’m open to correction on this) is that the rates Submec pay the guys they employ are as agreed with the Oz uni0n. You do sign a contract with them and again, as I understand it you become an employee of Submec for the duration. All normal Oz benefits are paid.
    Corrections on a postcard to:…. corrections@postcard.com

If you are based in Oz then call up Judy Rossier at Submec and ask her what it’s all about… she’ll tell you and I am sure they are looking right now.
If you are not based in Oz then you can pretty much forget working down there unless you are sponsored by an Oz registered company who will assist with the issue of a work permit.
If you are a trainee you should probably forget any notion of working in Oz unless you move there first.

    Someone mentioned ‘exceptional’ rates.
Submec pay the rates they have to in Oz. The rates apply to people working in Oz and you will pay tax on whatever you earn. No getting out of that.
I would find it highly unlikely that those rates would be paid at 100% out of Oz because there is no Oz uni0n influence abroad, although I have seen some guys on a reduced Oz rate (out of Oz) that is still attractive but not ‘exceptional’.

I like the idea of these higher rates down in Oz because I have seen that it is keeping the Oz ( and Kiwi I guess) guys off the international circuit and putting even more pressure on the rest of the world operators to up their rates accordingly. Bring it on I say!

Oz tax has just gone up for this new fiscal year. Snr. supv. and supernintendos will be paying 44%. Heaven help the single guys, newly – divorced guys, and anyone that doesn’t have a good write-off.

Actually h20mrv, I’m not a speciallist Recruiter. I have been working offshore for 15 yrs + and I’m good ROV Engineer/Supervisor. And Yes, I must be nuts to be still out here.
But You do have a valid point, Why would anyone go thru me if I did start this?
Which is why I posted the question on here as research, As Australia seems to work differently to everywhere else and I am trying to find out what the system is here as there are no local agencies.

I wouldn’t mind having a bit of Australian Pie 8)
Considering that Aussies have been working in the NorthSea for years ! If you can open the Agency and get through the red tape about foriegn nationals working there you have my vote 🙂

If you take into account the tax and the current exchange rate, the rates in oz are pretty poor compared to GBP and USD contracts elsewhere.

If you like sun, sand and ozzy shellas then take it as a working holliday downunder cobba.

Perth has 2 body shops at present,
"SUBMEC" supplying people too various companies ( Canyon,FUGRO etc) as well as TS Marine.
They will be manning their own XLXs in early 2009 so obviously taking some of the better guys currently on the Rem and Harmony for these systems, however they will need to be replaced.
The other company is "Velocious", along the same lines as SUBMEC in the fact they also manufacture tooling and ROV support but do supply personnel.

If you are a non Oz resident it doesn’t matter, work is available if you have the skills and experience.
