You best stick to make the coffee to a perfection and leave the stripping of the system to graduate coffee boys!

No matter your previous experience, how long you have been doing other jobs, how many bits of paper you have from world renowned ROV Training Schools…..when you get on there, you will be treated as a Trainee who has no idea what he’s doing.

Don’t take it personally, there has been a mass influx of trainees over the last few years and sometimes you just think "oh god, not another trainee".

It is up to YOU to show you have the capability and enthusiasm to learn. Please dont start with the attitude of "Im a trainee, you HAVE to teach me" as you will find you really will just be making the coffee and tidying up.

It is not enough to be willing to learn. You have to almost go out of your way to show you are wiling. Example – you stand there thinking "Ill stand here till someone tells me what to do, that will show Im keen and dont jump into things I dont know". The rest of the team think "lazy bugger, hes just standing there not doing anything!"

Find a job to do during the trip and do it every day. If its keeping the killer spray bottles topped with oil, keeping the workshop bench clean. Follow the others while they work, ask them questions.

The only stupid question is the one you dont ask. Yes, thats true. However – the same question asked 4 or 5 times means either your too stuipd to undertsand it or they really dont know to be able to explain it, either way the answers will stop coming 🙂

Get to know the routine, the deck checks, the planned maintenance. Get the manuals out for the ROV and equipment and read through them.

Do NOT sit and play games on the computer, wade through porn or whinge when you dont get to use the manipulator or fly the ROV.

Take your turns making the teas/coffees/sweeping up. We all had to do it, its not just you.

Remember, you need the team a lot more than they need you, most people are very happy to explain things or show how things are done. Somtimes work/client pressures will push you to one side so they can get on with the job. Accept it and stand to one side, watch and learn.

Can’t go wrong following that advice. I had this student volunteering with me and he was always angling to do all the ‘exciting’ tech stuff that I was being paid to do, ask him to chip in and perhaps do a bit of clearing up when time was short and he’d have a right face on. And his ultimate goal was to work offshore for the ‘big bucks’ 😕

DO NOT EVEN THINK OF STRIPPING IT DOWN!!!! It’s not an erector set! Any supv, supt, or company that does that nonsense are complete idiots (and yes, there are a few companies that encourage this!!!). You’re to keep the system operable 100% of the time. You’re to have spares to change out as fast as possible when a breakdown occurs. Indeed, the PMS will be kept up (without breaking down the system). And so on….

RTFM, RTFM, and RTFM (read the ******* manual)

Congrats on getting a start. Im also going off for the first time on the 2nd of Jan 😯 Have you done any work at your company’s base at all?

Id take along a small notepad as ive now got one in my possesion everywhere I go when im at work. If someones explaining something to you and its a bit to much you can always jot it down. Comes in handy for other notes and tea orders 😀

    Pried, mapsanji……….

So, tell us other newbies how you got on with your first trip, was it as good as you expected, and did you get some flying time? Or were there any mishaps? 😀

Nicely said Ray. Possibly the best advice I’ve heard for a new start.

    James,
how about puting Ray’s comment in as a sticky in the Rookie section?
