I guess there is a middle path to everything.
On the one hand the soft ‘wouldn’t say boo to a goose’ type UK workers get trounced on at every corner by the employers, jobs replaced by Filipinos etc.
On the other hand the Oz employers are boxed into a corner by the very workers that make up the MUA. A HUGE margin of difference there and yet all people involved both sides of the pond are basically from the same culture.
In the Oz offshore sector SS7 are under the watchful eye of MUA and party to an agreement with them, in the UK offshore sector SS7 are party to nothing, other than pissing people around and firing them however and when ever they feel the need. Oh.. except the UK divers that is, funny that eh?

It just shows what can be achieved with a little bit of organisation and the will to live like a human being.
It’s ironic though that the Aussies blame the Union culture on the Poms.
I worked there many years ago and attended a meeting which was hosted by 3 reps. An Englishman, an Irishman and a Scotsman.

ParticipantThe MUA campaign should be a doozy!
All the union wish to do is bring the seafarers on parity with the rest of the offshore industry; and so they should be!
Us ROV guys were once treated with contempt, when the AMMA & employers could feed us a ‘scrap wage’ and get away with it.
But it wasnt until the ROV troops got together & the MUA took on our cause and won!
Please note: The Gorgon & Pluto projects will need require Seafarers, Riggers, Crane crews, Divers & ROV people all of which are members of the MUA. So I expect to get a giggle out of future events. 😆

Strike brings Pluto project to ‘standstill’
The head of Western Australia’s construction union says he expects Woodside’s Pluto liquefied natural gas project to come to a standstill, after workers voted for strike action.

Last night more than 1500 workers voted to strike for 48 hours in protest against a system that that would see them change accommodation every month instead of getting their own permanent self-contained units, known as dongas.
"They want to move into their room and stay there, so none of them want to move out," construction union chief Joe McDonald told ABC.
"These people pay a big enough sacrifice coming up to the Pilbara to make Woodside, FosterWheeler, WorleyParsons and others wealthy people," he added.
Woodside’s $11 billion Pluto project is more than 80% complete and due to start exporting LNG in 2011.
Woodside claimed yesterday that the project is moving into peak construction and that they need to ensure there is space for workers when it becomes available.
The majority of the workers are under contract from other companies.
