We have a great schooling system, half decent health service (not brilliant but better than a lot of other countries), reasonably clean streets, decent water quality. All of these things need to be paid for. Our tax system is not that bad we pay less than Norway but more than Ireland. The government of the day is the one we voted in and most of the really big decisions are voted in by all sides of the house so the alternatives must agree with them to some extent.

I thought I’d move this particular topic away from SED
You are wrong , I did not vote those tossers in and I knew that they would screw up the country , like they did in the seventies !
I like things as plain and simple and Political ,Greenpeace ,Hippy, Foreign DO-GOODERS have F#@ked up this Fine nation by diluting our law 👿
The back-bone of this country , I.E me and people like me , The middleclass Tax payer are fed up with being screwed by the Lazy Pratts that are extremely rich ( Bankers , Solicitors and Financial advisers ) OR the Not so Poor , in Council houses that cannot be bothered to get a job And I pay for them ! POOR is what I saw in Bombay 😕 POOR is not having benefits TV , FAGS , Credit cards and buying cheap from ARGOS and ten kids 👿

The government of the day is the one we voted in

I did not vote them in , And have always found it hard to get someone to admit to voting them in ! Probably because the people I know work in the same industry as me or have a normal job and are the workers that pay their taxes , Unfortunately they are not the Lazy Assholes who sit on their arses doing nothing but watch TV ,smoke fags and spurt out kids everyyear ! They voted Labour ! Which makes sense really 😯 The definition of Labour being TO WORK , EXERTION , WORK HARD , CONTRACTIONS OF THE WOMB , EMPHASIZE LENGTHILY 😯
Labour should actually be called the Lazy party 😉
They would then be supported by ( As it says in the dictionary )
UNWILLING TO WORK , SPEND TIME IDLE , DOING LITTLE WORK, SHOWING LACK OF ENERGY 🙂
On the whole this country is F#cked by political do gooders brain washing my son what is racial discrimination and what is simply a Blackboard , Manhole and Gay is wrong , It dosen’t work and we will be extinct !
    LONG LIVE DARWIN 😆

    decent water quality

You jest sir ! I pay alot of money to Share holders for a product which comes down on top of my house seven months of the year ! Share holders make a hell of a lot of money off my back ( The company that owns the water authority where I live is American ! ) This year is the first year of many that we have NOT had a hose pipe ban due to Water company failings in water loss in pipes ! I’m a true patriot and proud of my heritage but embarressed but my country now 🙁

Our tax system is not that bad we pay less than Norway

Do you know what you are talking about ?
The wooden tops may be taxed more but they have better living quality , most have second summer homes the population is less and they have more revenue from Oil and Gas going back to the populace than a board of directors ! The shareholders are the Population ! The standard of living in Norway is better than any other country ( except Switzerland ) Their taxes might be higher but they have a better quality of living than we do and In Norway a Norwegien has more rights than a foreigener 😯
As for money , I have said it on numurous occasions !
I may get more money than other people in the country of my orrigin but I am in a specialised industry that provides the main bulk of revenue FOR MY COUNTRY , It’s a risky Job , Hence my insurance premiums are higher than the faggots sitting on their arse doing nothing ! My Tax is higher than the Faggots sitting on their arse doing nothing ! I loose my freedom working in a steel prison 6 months of the year ! I work a basic 12 hour shift instead of the standard 8 1/2 , I don’t have weekends off and I go to places that normal people would not even consider going to for a holiday because they are UNSAFE ! YOU ARE DAMN RIGHT I’m wanting my bloody SED 😈
If people like ME , Working in the same industry as ME decided that the money was not worth it it , The Nations main source of revenue would be severly affected and the Oil companys would loose Millions of profit and have to raise the price of products. Its all about money gentlemen ,
You get what you put in , If you don’t put in ………………… Get out !
All Lazy Barstewards should be rounded up stuck on a ship and sent west ! With no water 😀 And the scupper plugs removed And no sun cover 😀 With no food ! 😯
    TTFN 😀

I think we need to put a "novelette" section in this website…

Dude! Please don’t slag the hippies! There are, of course, several different varieties… Yours truly being the radical flavor. A much needed voice at times….

Ahhh… but the American system has defeated your lot again: a non-elected, slippery, polecat, who did as much damage if not more than the 8 drilling companies he ran into the ground. Why he topped that in 8 years by bankrupting the entire country by spending a billion ++ per week and pocketing (with his #2 dude) untold billions in dirty oil and gold money. Blood diamonds got nothing on this dude! And finally, the decline of the "New World Order" – a misnomer if there was any should read Disorder. The Bin Ladens of the world will surely miss him…

Wow lostboy talk about a reaction.

I was going to go through your response to my initial comment which led to this thread point by point but I do not have the time do that.

The government was voted in by everyone in the country who is over 18 and eligable going to a booth and voting for them. The party with the most seats is the government hooray. The thing is that some areas of the community will not like them and others will.

Yes the unemployed on jobseekers allowance rent paid and no input into the system will love the labour government.

Also those who are on low incomes with kids who get uplifts to ensure a decent wage at the end of the month will also be happy with the government.

Those that are least happy are the ones who pay the most tax and see the least in return for that tax. Then again those are more than likely the people who least need the benefits system.

What I fail to see is where your individual gripe is. If you are claiming SED you are not paying tax anyway so therefore are not funding

[the Not so Poor , in Council houses that cannot be bothered to get a job And I pay for them !]

With regard to water the part of the country where I live tends not to get hose pipe bans and if your water company is failing you then you have grounds to complain to find out what your money is being spent on.
Again in my area of the country the water quality is good the sewer system are all going through major overhauls and the quality of the river water is constantly improving so the money I pay is being used in the right ways and I hope it continues to do so.

Which insurance premiums are you refering to? My archietect who is working for me at the moment is paying a higher insurance premium than my company.

If you get your SED you do not pay tax therefore the average dude on the beach is contributing more into the system than you.

You me and everyother ROV pilot who works offshore does so by choice so we as an industry and certainly as individuals cannot even start to whine about being locked up for 6 months in a steel prison for six months or the working hours which are an agreed thing prior to signing any contract or agreeing to go on any job. You do not have weekends off because you have half the year off. I would love to find another job where I can earn in excess of £40 000 and still have 26 weeks holiday a year.

To answer the question at the top of the thread what type of country do I live in? A good country with good facilities a climate which is reasonable (normally), a multicultural society which has problems but where does not.

As another post I read ages ago on here quoted some Austrailian politician. If you do not like it you can use your freedom of choice and leave. I doubt I ever would.

Oh yes I voted labour as did most of my family. So when I refer to labour voters then I am also refering to myself. The problem with elections is they are all about who can convince enough people to vote for them on a given day with a given set of national and international situations. These can radically change in a short space of time and then the problem is that the party or prime minister cannot deal with the new set of circumstances.

The current set of economic problems is not just a British one or even a Labour one it is hitting the entire world even the massive emerging economies in India and China so I hope our politicians will work hard to protect homeowners and yes keep the banks going otherwise most of the country will end up in a very grim state.

    Good on you LuckyJim,

I thank you for sticking a rocket up these fascist=tory ars-holes.

These are the same types that move from council estates to more desirable country (within UK) or countries and then complain that the local accent is funny or you can’t get Watney’s Red Barrel and a packet of crisps!

Coming from a working-class background (my daddy was really a coal miner) these prats give me the proverbials.

    In short;

Get on in life to the best of your ability

Vote in the government that works for you (it’s called democracy)

Don’t forget your roots and help take those amongst them to where you are now

    Educate everyone!

Remember that you were there once too

Be civil, both mentally and socially

    The question was:

What Type of country do I live in !

    Answer:
A very nice one thank you

No need to defend anything going on around here. Nice and cosy and relaxed. Pay some tax, enjoy the sun, empty roads to ride the motorbike on all year round, cheap restaurants with good inexpensive food and wine etc. A good stable currency. Certainly no need to defend our choice of country of residence out of desperation, which is a feeling I get (via this forum) from some people living in a Kingdom further north of here.

Mid market live rates at 2008.12.18 15:02:12 UTC (www.xe.com)
    1.00 GBP = 1.05964 EUR
    1 EUR = 0.943720 GBP

Hardly the exchange rate of a success is it?

Yeah I havna forgotten my roots either 😯 My dad came from the east-end of London in a council house in Crouch End ,
He made a name for him self and swore never to go on the dole !
I also never want to go on the dole ! And find work where ever I can , Even moving to where it is easier to get it , NOT sit on my arse Taking benefits Smoking fags and spurting out kids every year !
And I take it because you are on the forum you are working offshore and are also not taking benefits !
Good for you for working ! 😯
If you cannot see who I’m pointing my little finger at , I see no reason to carry on this topic with ya 🙄

My, what a thought evoking subject. It is something that every offshore worker has an opinion on and no matter where you come from it is bound to be different. Having been in and out of the UK for the past 8-9 years I have seen a decline in the standard of living. But is this due to the number of people on the dole or migrant workers not putting the money back into the system?

One of the things that does puzzle me though is the type of people being employed within the UK. I go to the local shop and find my self talking to an Australian backpacker or someone from Poland behind the counter. It would seem that more and more the people from within the UK are deciding that the so called lower paid jobs just aren’t worth it. Especially since you get paid more to be on the "Dole".

Now remember this isn’t just happening in the UK but all western countries. Have the morals that have been taught to us by our own parents leading to our own system downfalls? We see ourselves as being to good to serve coffee at the local shop or sweep floors and take cleaning jobs?

Maybe, just maybe, rather than blaming the government for everything that you perceive as being wrong with your country maybe we should look in our own backyards and question how we are raising our children? Are we spoiling them so much that they won’t want to take the jobs that we deem unworthy for people of our education level? Are we teaching our children to value money and to work hard no matter what life deals you? Or are we looking down our noses at the people performing the jobs that we ourselves will not do?

    Just food for thought……..

    And it’s a good thought 🙂
Lets see now ……………… I will fix something first , be it electirical , mechanical , woodwork , Building or decorating ! before ringing someone else up.
I’ve done Bricklaying and did a good job but found it very stressfull on the back and so would employ a bricklayer who does it for a living and does it quicker than myself. I can do plastering on a small scale ( maybe , a wall ! ) but I would never be able to get a better finish than a plasterer who does it everyday and he would do it fsater so I would employ him and pay that extra cash for a good job.
I find most jobs in life just using a little bit of common sense and would do it myself. Would I pull my sleeves up to unblock a sewer………. Yes I would 🙂 Would I unblock the neighbours , if he asked me …….. Yes I would 🙂 If the guy living next to me was on benefits for no particular reason than being a lazy sod , would I come to his rescue and unblock his drains ? No I F#@king wouldn’t.
Would I stop by the road if I saw someone broken down , Yes I would , What if he or she was dressed differently to me ie western clothes …………………………….. ?
I would have to think about that 8)
Would I go out in the fields and help the local farmer because he asked me to ……………………… Yes I would , but I would not want to do it for a living as I would want something more challenging, But I’m not everyone , just me , everyone is different , some with more "drive" than others but I do not look down my nose at them , I just think if they are Lazy toe-rags living off my back ………………. I would not give them the "Time of Day"

Nice response. Very honest and down to earth.

I have to say I agree. I would give the shirt off my back to help others out. But I have to know that sometime some place it would be reciprocated. Doesn’t have to be me, but the good deed passed on.

    😀

    Feral,

You mentioned the fact that we should look to our own backyards first – indeed we should. Just returned from a trip from my "home" country and was – once again – shocked (also felt very thin in girth!!!) at the lack of (Lost’s words) drive as well as the amount of apathy towards: credit, parents, the law, and a few more eye-openers…. Some of this was within my direct family!!!

    Lost,

DIY is the only way to go where possible. Ya’ can save a fortune!
