Title edited by admin to reflect name change from UKOAA to OGUK.

Has anyone had a ukooa medical in manila?
I had one last year but didnt check the certificate before leaving the clinic,
when I got home I find its only for one year
And again this year different clinic and again they say they only do them for one year.If this is the fact then its more expensive than uk
I thought it was standard two years everywhere

The OGUK medical is, by it’s very name, an Oil & Gas medical for the UK offshore sector. In the absence of an international agreement/legislation (specific to the Oil & Gas/Energy Industry) it has been adopted/accepted (in the main) by the our industry on a global level.

In the UK – Assuming a healthy individual.

The offshore medical certificate, as it is commonly known, is only valid for a limited time, and you need to renew it to continue working offshore. For UK waters, all assets are controlled by Oil & Gas UK, and renewals, as from 1st January 2007, are required every 2 years irrespective of your age.

If it is a genuine Oil & GasUK (OGUK – Formerly UKOAA) then it should be valid for 2 years. I would suspect that any doctor issuing a one year medical is not authorised to issue OGUK medicals or, if they are, they need to read up on the guidelines. No matter what they say at the place you are asking for a medical, you might wish to go through the list below by phone until you get one that tells you what yo0u want to hear.

    For the Philippines
I have no idea if there are any local laws on the PI that limit any medial validity to 12 months no matter what they are for be it health/life insurance, travel, work. You’d need to check on that.

If I have specific medical questions regarding Oil & Gas UK offshore medicals you should I contact (by email) sharon@rsoh.co.uk
She will give you a definitive answer.

    Manila
Below are the latest results from http://www.oilandgasuk.co.uk
for OGUK approved/registered doctors. I wouldn’t go anywhere else.
If you have difficulty with any of them send and email to sharon@rsoh.co.uk advising her of the problems you have encountered.

Does your medical cert have a UKOG registration/serial number on it? It should do.

I suggest you contact them and ask them why your medical is only valid for 12 months. If you do not get a satisfactory answer advise them that you will be contacting OGUK to inform them of the situation.

If you have difficulty, or they are not co-operative, send an email to sharon@rsoh.co.uk advising her of the problems you have encountered.

    Quote:

    • The name of the doctor/organisation (as you posted above)
    • UKOG registration number on your medical cert.

If you can scan your cert and send them a copy then even better.
They will be able to look at the database to see when the medical was issued and by whom.

    I’ve had my medical at;

    Leticia C Abesamis
    American Outpatient Clinic
2/F Femii Bldg. A Soriano Jr. Ave.
    Intramuros
    Manila

for a few years running. I moaned this year about the two years. I was told that it’s Philippine law, whether this is true or not I don’t know but will email the suggested person to find out.

The medical in the UK is by no means cheaper, I guess it depends on how many nights you spend partying in Manila! The one thing that impresses me when getting the medical, is as a foreigner, they fast track you through. Right or wrong I’m not complaining.

The safety course in Subic is excellent, switched on guys and knowledgeable. Shell sends their people there so you know they’ve been audited. Don’t stay there as you can find a cheap hotel which is much more fun! Don’t do any heavy drinking as a few guys were tossed from the course for high BP. They were allowed back later with a recent medical.

I was there in Feb. and there were 3 guys from the US Navy in Guam on a ROV course as well as the safety. There were also a few young guys on the ROV course.

Ya ever get there give me a call on, +63 915-328-9032. I live in Angeles but get to Subic often and be happy to hook up for a beer. I’m in Holland until July now though as need to restock bank.

    Hi everyone,

is there a clinic that give you the medical and certification the same day?

I tried going to Healthway, Alabang. I went there, waited 2 hours to be told that the OGUK doctor was not even present. When I asked which days she is present, I got confused looks…

I don’t know about the rest of the clinics here, in the Philippines, but this one basically have you do all the tests and send them to "their" OGUK doctor who look at the tests results and sign the certificates. The certificate is then issued 3-5 days after the tests.

I had done a complete medical at another clinic and argued with them that she could just look at those and come to the same conclusions… No go.

    Basically, this doctor:

    Maria S L Bawalan
    Philippine College of Occupational Medicine
    Healthway Medical 2nd Floor
    Alabang Town Center
    Alabang Zapote Road
    Mutinlupa City
    Philippines
    Tel: 6328506721
    Fax: 6327206102
    Email: cherrylavin@yahoo.com

is not even present. If I want to meet her I have to call 3 days in advance. (or so I am told)

I decided to give them a call again today to see if she was in… Same.

    Cheers,
    E.

    Hi guys,

just to give a bit of feedback. I went to American Outpatient Clinic today and did the OGUK medical for 2.6kphp. It took a total of 3 hours.

Thing is, like the Healthway clinic in Alabang, there were no OGUK accredited doctors present, they did not know if or when he/she would show up, they did not issue me the cert and could not tell me how long before I got it. Fortunately though, they will courier it to me (200php) so I don’t have to waste more time in traffic for this.

The old woman that gave me the final physical barely spoke English, ordered a cholesterol screening for shits and giggles (280php). She would not look at the full executive medical results I had from 3 month ago to confirm I was healthy… I guess its not profitable to do this.

There were a lot of paperwork to fill when I got there, but once I got started I was taken from one test to the other and did not really wait.

I would recommend this place for expats because its just beside the BI if you need to process tourist VISA/exit clearance etc. But because of the reasons mentioned above, I would try another one. (Especially if you need your cert on the spot.)

I tried to message sharon@rsoh.co.uk to see if this practice was acceptable, but my message bounced back. Does anyone have any other contact for OGUK medical queries?

Given that to be accredited to sign OGUK medicals, a Physician only has to attend a seminar which’s purpose is to make them understand the physical and mental stress an offshore worker puts up with, I hardly see the point in this exercise if they are not even present and never actually see you. I think that OGUK medicals should just be a list of requirements passed at any clinics from any doctors if that is the case.

Then again. Its only my 2 cents worth.

    Cheers,
    E.
